Melissa Johnson was scheduled to be sentenced today. This is the second continuance defense has requested. One was already granted earlier in August.
For every hearing, several family members and friends have been present. Today, only a few could attend and traveled to Eureka despite the smoke due to the fires. They found out from me this morning that Johnson's attorney, Ms. Kathleen Bryson had filed a motion to continue the sentencing.
Ms. Bryson appeared via Zoom. Judge Christopher Wilson ordered Johnson to appear in person at the next court date.
Johnson's has an open plea to Count 1, accessory after the fact. The complaint states that Johnson and her co-defendant Von Keener of unlawfully, having knowledge that the crime of murder was committed by Mauricio Eduardo Johnson and they unlawfully harbored,concealed and aided Mauricio Eduardo Johnson with intent that he might avoid and escape from arrest, trial, conviction and punishment of said felony.
Mauricio is Melissa's son.
If you read my previous and exclusive coverage, you know family members of the Bear River Homicide victim are upset with the plea, the possibility of Johnson being placed on probation.
Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is the prosecutor. Sentencing was continued to 10/19 over the People's objection.
