Humboldt COVID case count remains at 54


No additional positive cases of COVID-19 were confirmed today. Humboldt County’s total case count stands at 54.

While it costs you and I money and freedom during the pandemic, if you are a ne'er-do-well and irresponsible, Phase 1, 2, 3 or 4 doesn't matter


This shelter in place means I am home a lot. Trying, just like you to work under challenging conditions and have the same stress about uncerainty and finances.

Inconsiderate and irresponsible people including those travelers are one of the reasons Humboldt is stuck in Phase 1. How are we supposed to have zeros in a row for a required period when there is flagrant disregard for the health order and no consequences?

18 illegal trespassers removed from 4th Street due to ongoing criminal activity

Sheriff William Honsal expressed appreciation for Governor Newsom’s decision to keep beaches in Humboldt County open and limit closures to parts of Southern California.

Convicted murderer Richard Dean was sentenced today to a prison term of 15 years to life. On March 16, Dean pleaded guilty to second degree murder of Anthony Pennucci.

The negotiated agreement was  for 15 years to life in prison for second degree murder. He didn't have to plead to any special allegations. Dean is ineligible for probation. He will be on parole for life.

Clayton Lasinski sentencing continued due to several issues with the plea


Sentencing for Clayton Lasinski was scheduled for April 30. The plea agreement was a stipulated term of 11 years in prison which Lasinski will serve at 85%.

Judge Christopher Wilson continued the sentencing to May 11 on the Court's own motion due to several issues with the plea.

"As Sheriff, I am the protector of constitutional rights in Humboldt County and if an order is issued that I believe violates our constitutional rights, I will not enforce it.”


Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal announced this morning firm opposition to an anticipated announcement by Governor Gavin Newsom that would close all beaches in California.

"The transition to Stage 2 will occur through a statewide modification to the stay-at-home order."


Gavin Newsom could have chosen to give local government the authority to implement Phase 2 without a modification to his statewide order. He did not; the four points below are from the Los Angeles Times on the four phases to reopen parts of the economy in California.

6 Bay Area counties ease restrictions starting May 4

Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Marin and San Francisco counties and the city of Berkeley have eased some restrictions starting May 4  regarding the shelter-in-place order which was extended to May 31.

Methanol lab discovered during structure fire response


On April 28, 2020, at about 1:42 p.m., deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) were dispatched to a residence on the 1400 block of Splinter Lane in Bayside to investigate an illegal methanol lab.

Timothy Anderson had four cases on calendar this afternoon for his OR/bail hearing.

20 year old victim says unknown male stabbed him on Walnut Drive

On April 28, 2020, at about 11:15 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of Walnut Drive, in the county’s jurisdiction of Eureka, for the report of a stabbing that had just occurred.

Man who threatens homeless man at Wells Fargo turns out to be his jail buddy

Yesterday, Eureka Police Department responded to a call at the Wells Fargo branch located on 6th Street. They have a security guard at the branch now.

A homeless man with a hoe, that still had the store sticker on it, was walking back and forth outside the entrance. He was harassing customers and asking for money.

Guy at Target gone, alley is quiet, wonder why?



It has only been one night so far and 12 hours but I am grateful. The guy at Target with the radio "phone" is gone. Someone else may take his spot but even a brief respite is welcome.

Guess Eureka City Council is okay with people taking clothes off in residential neighborhoods?




This is the sixth "special" constituent today in Eureka Councilmember Kim Bergel's district, two blocks from Eureka City Hall, since 3 a.m.

The Order of the Health Officer requiring county residents to wear facial coverings was updated Tuesday, April 28, to clarify guidance specifically on masking children and on masks with valves. The rest of the guidance remains the same.

California is currently in Phase 1 of the state stay at home order said Governor Gavin Newsom. There are four phases. California Department of Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell said, “During phase two, counties may choose to relax stricter local orders at their own pace."

Dorian Coon sentenced to 7 years in prison for Subway robbery



Defendant Dorian Michael Coon, age 21, formerly of Willits and Lakeport, was sentenced Tuesday morning in the Mendocino County Superior Court to 84 months in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Special counsel appointed for the limited purpose of discussing the potential conflict(s) raised in motion to disqualify Michael Acosta




Setting of preliminary hearing and status of two motions filed by the District Attorney was rescheduled for April 22. It was continued again to April 28.

So what has the City of Eureka done about it? Nothing as usual. 



Fences outside churches, businesses, law offices, even government buildings. Junkies sprawled out all over Eureka. The City Council inaction is costing private businesses and taxpayers money and using EPD resources.

In an effort to get people back to work and support the local economy, the Humboldt County Emergency Operations Center is launching a pilot program with restaurants that are following stringent anti-COVID measures.

"Mr. Cudney has lost employment and cannot pay me.  I am willing to continue at a court appointed rate."


Jury trial for vehicular manslaughter and DUI suspect Gary Cudney  scheduled to start today was vacated. Cudney is charged with the death of Dwight Davis aka "Dirty Dave."

Mental health diversion or jury trial for former therapist?


Former therapist Edward Pena's evidentiary hearing for mental health diversion was continued to April 24. It was continued again to June 8. Jury trial is scheduled for June 22.

Another change of plea for yet another Aaron Hungerford case


Aaron Hungerford had a hearing for his remaing two misdemeanor DUI cases from 2019 on April 24.  Change of plea is scheduled for May 1.

No arraignment date but Brian Daniels has charges for his 2020 arrest


There is a 2020 case for Brian Daniels in the Humboldt Superior Court system.  The charges are VC23152 (a), DUI and VC23152 (b), driving with a blood alcohol concentration ("BAC") of 0.08% or higher. No arraignment date scheduled yet.

The face you make when EPD arrests you for domestic violence




Timothy Wayne Anderson was arrested by EPD for PC 273.5, domestic violence on April 23. His bail is $50,000 and he is still in custody.

One of the reasons I wanted to post about the arrest is because during this shelter in place order, with the courthouse closed, it is challenging to file documents and have somewhere to make a private phone call.

Jury trial for Sherae O' Shaughnessy was scheduled to start April 27. That date had been vacated with a trial setting scheduled for June 3. Today, that date was reset to July 7 for trial setting/possible change of plea.

COVID 19 community testing site will initially focus on testing frontline workers

On April 24, there was a press release from the Humboldt Joint Information Center stating that,
"A COVID-19 community testing site, provided by the State of California Testing Task Force in conjunction with OptumServe, is slated to open in Eureka and is estimated to be fully operational for the public in the next one to two weeks."

Civil disobedience May day protest planned for next Friday


On Friday, May 1, 2020, a civil disobedience May day will take place in front of the Courthouse. There was a protest yesterday at the same location raising similar concerns about the local shelter in place order, the restrictions and the effect on the local economy.

A defense expert will assist with Maxx Robison's sentencing


Maxx Robison was scheduled to be sentenced on April 24. It was continued to May 13.

Robison did not enter an Arbuckle waiver and Judge Christopher Wilson was not present today. Defense also made a motion to continue and said "an expert would be assisting with sentencing."

When you have run out of options to delay sentencing, you pull this trick

Wayne Graham was  scheduled to be sentenced yesterday, it was continued to April 24. Judge Lawrence Killoran said he was not going over everything put on record yesterday.

The man has 37 cases in the system. After he was found guilty of assault in his latest case and couldn't get his way with recent rulings, his attorney pulls this trick. Now at taxpayer expense, Graham gets to hold up a jail bed and delay consequences for his actions.

Woman who broke into EPD officer's house deemed competent to stand trial




Last December, Jacquelyn Bradley was ordered by Judge Timothy Canning to be committed to the State Hospital for an in patient treatment program. Bradley retained her right to refuse anti-psychotic meds.
