San Jose Police Union ED charged with illegally importing fentanyl, drugs and using her office for distribution

Joanne Marian Segovia, executive director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association has been placed on leave after federal charges were filed against for importing drugs including fentanyl and using her office to distribute the controlled substances. Segovia turned herself in, no bail was set at her first court appearance. Next court date is April 28.

Convicted felon pleads guilty to attempted murder of deputies,faces 43 years to life in prison


Convicted felon Jared Aubrey pleaded guilty today to two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two counts of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle. Aubrey also admitted that he discharged a firearm related to the attempted murder charges.

Briceland man arrested for sexual assault, sexual exploitation and other crimes involving minors


Sebastion Hockett was arrested on a Ramey warrant. I checked with the jail staff, Hockett is on a no bail status and expect arraignment to be delayed since  he is in quarantine and will be for 5 to 7 days. Since additional charges are expected to be filed, that gives HCSO time to get the report to the DA. Hopefully, it also gives the prosecutor filing charges more time and information to file a complaint instead of having to amend it later.

Remember the  9 year old boy who was found unresponsive in the Ingomar Club pool in 2021? Humboldt Bay Fire, Eureka Police Department and HCSO Chaplain responded to the medical emergency. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Smash and grab suspect off to prison for a while

 

Smash and grab suspect Nathan Ruptak was sentenced to prison today to the stipulated term of 3 years for all his cases. He has 146 days of custody credits.

In November it was meth, now it is attempting to bring fentanyl into the jail

 


Frequently arrested Halli Lee Pole was arrested yesterday by HCSO. This time for attempting to smuggle fentanyl into the jail. On Nov. 29, 2022, HCSO arrested Pole on various charges including possession of meth and bringing drugs into the correctional facility.

Convicted sex offender arrested for the fourth time in less than 4 months

 

Convicted sex offender Bartholomew Clarence Hickman was arrested for the fourth time in less than 4 months. Yesterday Fortuna Police Department arrested for two counts of PC 290.011(a) failure to register by a transient sex offender, PC 290.012(a) failure to registee as a sex offender,  PC 148 (a) (1) resisting arrest and two counts of PC 853.7 violating a written promise to appear in court.

Convicted sex offender Shawn Sterling Porter was arrested by HCSO yesterday for PC 148 (a) (1) resisting arrest and  PC 290.018(b) failure to register as a sex offender . Once again, he was released on O.R.

Almost a year and a half later, no preliminary and Little Eagle Moon's case has a change of plea

 


Little Eagle Moon's preliminary hearing and several other hearings including a motion for return of property kept being continued over and over. 

Almost a year and half since his arrest, all that live media coverage, multiple law enforcement agencies at the scene, chase in Eureka, Moon resolved his two cases today. Moon admitted violation in his parole case. He entered a time waiver for sentencing. Moon entered a conditional plea in his attempted murder case.

Finally DA charges former court mediator with secretly videotaping 4 women

 


Finally, after months of checking regularly and often daily, charges have been filed by the DA against former Humboldt Superior court mediator and former CWS employee Joe Hale.  He was arrested on June 29, 2022.

Four misdemeanor counts of PC 647 (j) (2) known as criminal invasion of privacy or disorderly conduct by secretly videotaping or photographing the body or undergarments of another person. There are four alleged victims, all women.

For a first time offender, the sentence is six months in jail and a fine of $1,000. California law makes this charge a misdemeanor.

Took a jury an hour to acquit a defendant of animal cruelty



The  jury in People vs  Jamael Brandon Lowery found him not guilty of Count 1 PC 597 (a), animal abuse/cruelty. The jurors went into deliberation at 3:27 pm and came back with a verdict at 4:28 p.m. The charge had already been reduced to a misdemeanor in this 2023 case. Lowery was released from custody.  

Rob Arkley said he is moving his company's money to Wells Fargo or JP Morgan , also shared his thoughts about Redwood Capital and credit unions

 


Rob Arkley said he is moving his company's money to either JP Morgan or Wells Fargo under the theory that "these banks are too big to fail." He added, "I wouldn't have a dime over the insured limit in smaller banks" such as credit unions or Redwood Capital. "Why would you take the risk? Money is too hard to make."

Kyle Dillon arrested for embezzlement


Kyle William Dillon was arrested by HCSO yesterday for PC 503 embezzlement. HCSO PIO Samantha Karges said Dillon was "arrested at a residence on the 2400 block of Aster Place in Eureka."

Dillon was released on O.R.

Last night no agenda or even listing for 3/28/23 Board of Supervisors meeting online. This morning at 10:53 a.m.  I went to to the 5th street entrance where the agendas are usually posted and walked right past Rex Bohn who was leaving the Courthouse. 

Palavi Vainuku arrested for two new drug charges and a bench warrant for a 2022 court case


Palavi Junior Vainuku was arrested by Eureka Police Department yesterday on a bench warrant for PC 148 (a) resisting arrest and and PC 647 (h) loitering to commit a crime from a 2022 case and new charges of HS 11364 possession of drug paraphernalia and HS 11350 possession of a controlled substancd from this 2023 arrest.

Vainuku was released on O.R.  Listed below are two court  cases Vainuku was associated with, one in Humboldt Superior Court and one in Butte Superior Court.

Felon arrested in 2018 homicide

An arrest has been made in the 2018 homicide of Anthony Joseph Calderone.

On March 22, 2023, 38-year-old Matthew Gabriel Susmilch was arrested on a Ramey Warrant at the Mendocino County Jail, where he was also booked on unrelated warrant charges out of Mendocino County.

For those interested in Shadowlight Ranch lawsuit, still a whole lot of nothing except dates constantly being vacated and reset

 


Checked on the Shadowlight Ranch LLC lawsuit yesterday. On 7/28. no settlement.Another settlement conference on 3/21. Again no settlement but three days later, there was a joint notice of conditional settlement. Since then, mostly all that keeps happening is dates being vacated and reset. 

Third arrest after failure to appear in court and released again on O.R. by the jail

 


Hillary Deskins had a bench warrant out for her second failure to appear in one 2023 case. Yesterday, she was arrested by the Yurok Tribal Police on that warrant and was booked at midnight for HS11364 (a) possession of drug paraphernalia, HS11377(a) possession of a controlled substance, PC 487 (a) grand theft and  PC 594 (b) (1) vandalism. 

This is the third time she has been arrested and despite failures to appear in court, once again released on O.R.

Crystal Sanchez arrested for domestic violence

Crystal Jane Sanchez was arrested yesterday by Arcata Police Department for PC 273.5 (a) domestic violence. She posted bond.

With the injuries to her face, let's see what the investigation uncovers and if any charges are filed.

Since the post was published, it has has been updated with a response from Mad River Hospital Human Resources. Sanchez is not currently employed with MRH and hasn't been for a while.

Trial dates set in former baseball coach's alleged molestation case

 


Former baseball coach and alleged molestor Benjamin Pesch was held to answer to PC 288 (c) (1) lewd act upon a child. The alleged victim John Doe was 15 years old at the time. Pesch was arraigned on information today on the same charge. Trial confirmation scheduled for 6/15; jury trial on 6/26.

I am the only one who posted about Pesch's arrest, reported on the case and covered the preliminary hearing. This is yet another case like the Kailan Meserve rape case and trial and several others  with well connected families ignored by other local media.

Trinidad Rancheria staff were notified this morning. There was an immediate response from the staff which included Trinidad Rancheria executives and Trinidad Mayor.

David Cruz arrested for assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment, domestic violence, robbery and joyriding


24 year old David Junior Cruz was arrested by Eureka Police Department yesterday for PC 273.5 (a) corporal injury to a spouse/cohabitant, PC 245 (a) (1) assault with a deadly weapon, PC 236 false imprisonment, PC 211 robbery, PC 207(a) kidnapping and VC 10851(a) driving or taking a vehicle without consent.

Sources say KAEF North Coast News has fired "all except for two reporters"

 


A reader reached out to me.  The reader specifically asked me to follow up and mentioned that this had not been covered by any other local media. 

"Did you know about the Sinclair pink slip express wiping out KAEF except for two reporters?"

The Sinclair specific reference is posted below from the original media source that reported it but the Sinclair layoffs were covered by various media outlets.

I initially reached out to KRCR General Manager Teansie Garfield.  She has retired. I contacted KRCR Assistant New Director Nazy Javid who directed me to the new KRCR General Manager John Manzi. KRCR oversees KAEF North Coast News operations and staff in Humboldt.

Rapist Patrick Marshall arrested on warrant in his probation violation case


Rapist Patrick Michael Marshall was arrested yesterday by Fortuna Police Department on a bench warrant for parole violation. I reported on his arrest in December 2022.

Marshall resolved his alleged molestation case with a plea for statutory rape.

Oakland Diocese faces bankruptcy to deal with approximately 330 sexual abuse lawsuits

Three days after the Diocese of Santa Rosa filed for bankruptcy to settle sexual abuse litigation, the Diocese of Oakland said it is is facing approximately 330 sexual abuse lawsuits.

Bishop Michael C. Barber made the same announcement in a letter about the possibility of filing for bankruptcy as San Diego Diocese and Diocese of Sacramento.

Kudos to Eureka Police Chief Todd Jarvis and EPD Commander Leonard LaFrance for their leadership and efforts. Kudos to Lifehouse Church for opening their doors and actually practicing Jesus' teachings. 

There is a need in the Myrtletown area for such a shelter. Other megachurches in Eureka and the Myrtletown area respond by locking their doors and looking down on those less unfortunate on a regular basis.

Brie Bennett, Russ Clanton, former HCSO Deputy Mike Hass all testify at Kailan Meserve's never ending habeas hearing

 


In December 2022,  I reported that convicted rapist Kailan Meserve's habeas corpus hearing started but after the first day, it was interrupted and continued by stipulation due to the earthquake emergency.

The three day hearing resumed on March 13 but is already on Day 4. Closing arguments continued to 5/26.

Attempted murder suspect arrested a month later for Bridgeville incident

Clayton Lloyd Miller was arrested at 3 a.m. today by Eureka Police Department on a Ramey warrant for PC664/187(a) attempted murder and PC 246 shooting at inhabited dwelling or occupied vehicle.

This outstanding warrant is from February when HCSO responded to an incident in Bridgeville. In 2022, Miller was arrested  for domestic violence and false imprisonment and arrested in Hydesville in 2020 on multiple warrants.

First San Diego, now Santa Rosa Diocese files bankruptcy to settle 222 sex abuse claims

There was a press release Friday. Today, the Diocese of Santa Rosa filed for bankruptcy. Humboldt Catholic churches are a part of this diocese. Bishop Robert F. Vasa had announced the  possibility of filing bankruptcy in December 2022.

On March 6, 2023 there was a hearing in an ongoing dispute between Kyla Tripodi Nored vs Andrew Barnett and Nazanin Namazi.  There is another case management conference on 6/9/23.

Namazi contacted me in 2021. I did not post her allegations at that time. The screenshots are from that 2021 contact. Now there is this court filing with the allegations of mold and it also mentions the defamation lawsuit..

This morning, there was trial setting, status of discovery, a case management conferennce and demurrer from former Deputy Public Defender Rory Kalin's third amended complaint from former Public Defender Marek Reavis, current Public Defender Luke Brownfield and County of Humboldt. The other defendant in the lawsuit is Humboldt Judge Gregory J. Kreis.
