Fifth officer in the text chain broke up with his girlfriend a year ago

I was the first one to notice and post about the two officers names being visible in the screenshots in the Sacramento Bee article.

I observed Officer Cassidy and Officer Jones in the screenshots. That rules them out as snitches.Sgt. Sanchez and Officer Meftah were already identified. They wouldn't snitch on themselves.

On March 30, 2021, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) served one search warrant to investigate illegal cannabis distribution at a residence on the 2800 block of I Street in Eureka.

Jurors were sent home around 2:40 p.m. today in the Jason Smith Sr. case. There is no court tomorrow so they were asked to return Thursday.

An hour into deliberations yesterday, the jury in the Jeff Tsarnas case sent their first note on March 29. The jury left at 4:30 yesterday and are returning today at 10 a.m. No verdict as of 4:29 p.m. The jury left for the day. Courts are closed tomorrow.

Mendocino Judge Moorman part of group that will examine successful court practices adopted during the pandemic

California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye today named an ad hoc workgroup that will examine successful court practices adopted during the pandemic and recommend those that demonstrate the most promise to increase access to justice, modernize services, and promote consistency and uniformity throughout the state.

"Ask the victims of crimes who have been put in fear of their lives if they consider a robbery to be petty. I can assure you they do not."


A coalition of California district attorneys, police, business leaders and crime victims will hold a news conference on Tuesday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m. PST to express their strong opposition to SB 82, a bill that would downgrade some felony robberies to misdemeanor charges of petty theft.

Jury trial for GOP vandalism suspect reset for September

 


At trial confirmation for GOP vandalism suspect Michael Valls this morning, jury trialfor April 5 was vacated.

Jonathan Palmer was arrested in February 2021 by HCSO and booked for the felony charge PC 171 (b), unauthorized possession of a weapon in public buildings or  meetings. Palmer was released on OR.

After Judge Timothy Canning read jury instructions,  attorneys presented closing arguments in Jeff Tsarnas' hit and run jury trial. 

Jurors left for lunch at 12:15. They will return at 1:45 to pick a foreperson and start deliberations.

Humboldt County cost for COVID 19 have reached 11.7 million

 


Since the first local case of COVID-19 was diagnosed Feb. 20, 2020, Humboldt County’s costs to respond to the global pandemic have reached $11.7 million.

"The difference between Mr. Tsarnas being convicted and the difference between him being exonerated."

 


Attorneys in the Jeff Tsarnas case were supposed to meet with Judge Timothy Canning at 1:30. Jurors were asked to return at 3 p.m.

Defense called Jamie Hansen. She was nervous, did not want to be there, said it had been three years. She said the visibility was low and there was "fig, extra thick." People did not have her testify. Deputy District Attorney Steven Steward did not cross examine her.

Defense rested their case. People had no rebuttal.

Judge Neel one of  my favorite Humboldt Judges. She can hear any kind of case. If you have a civil case, she is the best. Judge Neel is fair, objective, listens to both sides, follows the law and will not allow nonsense and disrespect for the court.

Alleged rapist Darius Upshaw entered a limited time waiver today since his attorney, Mr. Russ Clanton, is currently in trial. Defense filed a motion to continue.

Glenn Kaminsky was arrested last July for PC273.5 (a),corporal injury to spouse or cohabitant. As of yesterday, charges are still pending. He posted bail.

California expands vaccine eligibility


With supply of vaccines expected to significantly increase in the coming weeks, the state is expanding vaccine eligibility to more Californians. Starting April 1, individuals aged 50+ will be eligible to make an appointment, and individuals 16+ will be eligible to make an appointment to be vaccinated starting on April 15.

To whoever in court tech that has been working on the camera for the Jeff Tsarnas trial in Courtroom 3, thank you. It has been very helpful.

I know it is a lot of extra work but the camera being adjusted so we can watch the witness, the surveilance footage, especially when you arw covering a court case is helpful.

I don't know who all were involved in this decision but Judge Timothy Canning definitely would be. It is appreciated.

After several dark days, jurors excused today because defense not ready in Flowers trial

I came in towards the end of as Judge Christopher Wilson was excusing the jurors in the Michael Flowers trial for the day and this was minutes the courtroom was opened.

The defense has filed a motion to dismiss in Jeff Tsarnas hit and run jury trial. The attorneys were ready to proceed with arguments but Judge Timothy Canning said, he would prefer to address it later today. 

On record, Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke stated "destruction of exculpatory evidence" and "illiciting testimony that is untrue."

Newsom nominates Rob Bonta who would be California's first Filipino American Attorney General if confirmed

Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that he will submit to the State Legislature the nomination of Alameda Assemblymember Rob Bonta as the next California Attorney General, filling the seat vacated by Xavier Becerra, who was recently sworn in as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The nomination is subject to confirmation by the California State Assembly and Senate within 90 days.

Barbara Craft, Tsarnas' ex girlfriend is bactracking on what she told law enforcement and what she is saying in court.

"You never said this to anyone before this morning, ' O God what if I had hit a person'," Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke asked Craft. The statement is what Craft claims Tsarnas allegedly told her.

Former HCSO correctional deputy to be arraigned on April 6

 


Former HCSO Correctional Deputy Ricardo Aguirre was taken into custody on March 2. He resigned from his position.

Aguirre is scheduled to be arraigned on April 6.The charges are not the same as booking charges. There are co-defendants based on the case number.

Aguirre is charged with PC 182 (a) (1), criminal conspiracy to commit a crime; PC 664/4573 (a), with a special allegation, and two counts of PC 30600 (a).

Tsarnas' ex girlfriend changes her statement last minute and testifies for the People

 


The Jeff Tsarnas hit and run jury trial did not start until 10:30 this morning. Jurors were called at 9:15, told the trial would most likely start at 9:30 a.m.

Before the jurors were brought in, Judge Timothy Canning asked the attorneys if there was anything that needed to be addressed.
