COVID 19 exposure delays jury selection in at least one case

As far as I know, the two cases currently in jury trials are Michael Flowers and Jeff Tsarnas. Flowers has had no livestream for days. Tsarnas has been in the middle of jury selection. Tsarnas trial was dark on Friday. It is a dark day today. The Tsarnas trial will be back for status tomorrow.

I do not know if the following applies to one or both of the two jury trials or other cases in the process of jury selection but there has been a COVID exposure in the Tsarnas case. What happens now with that trial depends on the Department of Public Health. According to more than one source, the delay in jury selection is because a juror tested positive for COVID 19.

I have reached out to the Courts, DHHS and Public Health and cced Supervisors and HCSO PIO.

Humboldt Superior Court CEO and Jury Commissioner Kim Bartleson responded promptly.

"The jury selection in the Jeff Tsarnas case is delayed due to a COVID positive person having been in attendance in that court last Thursday, March 11th.  Public health has oversight of the situation and the court is following their directions. No identity categorization about the positive person will be provided."

"Public Health has nothing to add," responded DHHS spokesperson Heather Muller.
