 On February 24, 2023, at approximately 5:59 A.M., a solo vehicle fatal traffic crash occurred on US-101 southbound, south of the West End Road under-crossing in Arcata.

On Feb. 25, 2023, at about 8:30 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of Highway 101 and Palmer Boulevard, near Fortuna, for the report of a carjacking.

After years, Daniella Moore resolves her murder case with a plea right before trial

 

On February 24, at intervention, Daniella Moore resolved her 2019 case by pleading guilty to murdering Hannah Hayhurst, assault on Misty Miller, withdrew her not guilty plea by reason of insanity and waived her right to appeal.

Trial assignment scheduled for 2/24 and jury trial for 2/27 was vacated.

Terrance Longjaw arrested for assault causing great bodily injury

On Feb. 25, 2023, at about 12:01 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence the 800 block of Nooning Creek Road near Whitethorn for the report of an assault.

Bridgeville attempted murder suspect was arrested last year for domestic violence and false imprisonment

 


I reported previously on Clayton Miller. He was arrested in Hydesville in 2022 when he was arrested for domestic violence and false imprisonment and also arrested in Hydesville in 2020 on multiple warrants. HCSO has been looking for him since yesterday on charges for attempted murder and shooting at an inhabited dwelling.

Rex's name is not plastered all over the agenda. He is listed as Vice-Chair and First District Supervisor but that is standard listing of the Supervisors by name and district on the first page. No agenda item with his name on it. Bushnell's name appears once on the agenda.

The agenda for the February 28 Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting has one litigation listed. A wrongful termination lawsuit has been filed by Pepper Lopez against the County. She is pro per.

Ms. Lopez is the Yurok Tribe's Wellness Court Coordinator.

18 year old arrested for possession of stolen vehicle

On Feb. 23, 2023, at about 9:07 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in McKinleyville conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation on the 2600 block of Central Avenue.

Humboldt CHP PIO Paul Craft sent the following traffic alert . "The California Highway Patrol is responding to, or on the scene of, multiple crashes this morning.  If you must drive, please use caution and stay alert for icy conditions and debris in the road.  Slow down, avoid making sudden turns or aggressively braking, and leave space between you and other drivers."

Two arrests for criminal conspiracy, burglary and stolen property

On Feb. 22, 2023, at about 7:35 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to investigate a burglary in progress at a residence on the 4300 block of Fieldbrook Road in Fieldbrook.

Alleged molestor charged with unlawful sexual intercourse, sexual penetration and lewd acts with a minor

 


After waiving his preliminary hearing two weeks ago, the DA amended the complaint and alleged molestor Matthew Dickerson was held to answer to 8 felony counts. At arraignment today, Trial confirmation was scheduled for 4/10; jury trial for 4/17. 

Newest Deputy Public Defender's client acquitted in DUI case

 


On February 21, a Humboldt County jury acquitted Deputy Public Defender Emery Welton’s client.

According to the Humboldt County Public Defender's office, the defendant acquitted "on all counts based on a coercion defense; driving under the influence with special allegations of high blood alcohol content and refusal of chemical test."

Fortuna based band debut album to be released following success of lead single

 


The Critics, an alternative rock band based in Fortuna will be releasing their debut album “Miserable & Melodramatic” to music streaming platforms on February 28th. An album release party is being held on March 4.  The lead single “The Noise” is being played from coast to coast.

60 year old felon arrested with two pounds of meth and firearms

 


On Wednesday February 22, 2023 the Humboldt County Drug Task Force served a search warrant on the 2600 block of Hall Avenue in Eureka after receiving information that 60 year old Brian Fleming was selling large amounts of methamphetamine out of his residence. 

Resolves 3 cases last months, fails to show up for sentencing today

 


Last month, Megan Smith resolved three open cases before the preliminary hearing in her 2022 drug case. Smith has 22 cases in the Humboldt Superior Court system.

Moron almost runs pedestrians over while evading EPD

 


About 5 minutes ago, just saw the moron with the truck speed through a  green light on 5th Street in Eureka. This is the corner near Laguna Inn. An Eureka Police Department officer was right behind him him. The guy then turned into the parking lot near Sammy's BBQ. Moron almost ran over pedestrians crossing while evading EPD.

Benjamin Dimmick who had 8 cases in Eureka when I last covered him in 2018 was arrested by MCSO on 2/17 for arson and burglary. Of those 8 prior cases, one was a dismissal.

James Leach was arrested on January 26 2023, January 7 2023 and December 8 2022. Two cases have already been filed against him for the January 7 arrest by EPD and December 8  arrest by HCSO.

Rhett August resolves his latest case for another prison stint

 


Convictee felon Rhett August had trial confirmation scheduled on 2/15 in his latest case which was an arrest in 2022.  Instead he resolved his case by pleading guilty to Count 1 PC 246, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied vehicle, for a stipulated mid term of 5 years in prison. Counts 2 and 3 were dismissed as part of the plea.

Daniel Ralls held to answer to attempted murder and all charges

 


Attempted murder suspect Daniel Fernandez Ralls' preliminary hearing was continued to today. Ralls was held to answer. Arraignment on information is 3/2.

Deputy Public Defender David Celli's motion to continue the preliminary again was denied by Judge Joyce Hinrichs . Deputy District Attorney requested order to show cause for the continuance. Judge Hinrichs found there was no good cause for the continuance.

Veronica Roberts in jail for resisting arrest, violation of a court order, trespassing and vandalism

  


Veronica Lynn Roberts was arrested by HCSO yesterday for PC148 (a) (1) resisting arrest, PC 602(m) trespassing, PC 166(a)(4) violating a court order or contempt of court and PC 594(b)(2)(a) vandalism. 

In addition to a court case for this arrest, Roberts has two other open criminal cases; one from 2020 and one from 2017.

Brett Watson's parole revocation hearing yesterday for his 2021 criminal case was continued to April 11 because the Deputy Public Defender for that case was unavailable. If Watson can afford a private attorney in his civil lawsuit, why are the taxpayers footing his legal expenses in the criminal case?

Day 1 of the trial on City of Arcata's request for a permanent restraining order against Brett Watson included testimony from Arcata City Manager Karen Diemer.  35 exhibits from the City of Arcata were identified. Two of those exhibits were my articles regarding Watson ccing Diemer via email and another one on Watson's arrest. Day 2 was continued to March 8 in this 2022 case.

Kneeland homicide suspect Austin Medeiros who also assaulted a correctional deputy was arraigned this morning on 8 counts. Trial confirmation is on 3/27; jury trial on 4/10.

Convicted molestor and former CALFire employee sentenced 23 years to life in prison

 


I covered convicted molestor and former CALFire employee Miles Neiva jury trial and case. Neiva was sentenced 23 years to life in prison which is the maximum. He has 594 days in custody credits.

24 year old woman arrested for stabbing a 50 year old male in Mckinleyville

On Feb. 12, 2023, at about 6:07 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 1100 block of Hayes Road in McKinleyville for the report of a stabbing.

On Feb. 13, 2023, at about 6:31 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a business on the 1100 block of Redway Drive in Redway for the report of a man trespassing on the property.

San Quentin Captain arrested for sexual assault of an unconscious person

San Quentin State Captain Orlando Ponce was arrested by the Marin County Sherrif's Office for PC 289 (d) forcible penetration on an unconscious person. Ponce started worked at San Quentin State prison in 2001 as a correctional officer. Bail was $100,000 and he posted bond. There is no booking photo in the system.

"Mini rex" is a nickname given to Bushnell by an online commenter on another local "media" site. The County choses to primarily throw advertising dollars at this "media" outlet despite the plethora of options available for better promotion. 🤔


This is just the cost of NACO registration rates. There is transportation, food, lodging, drinks. Who paid for these? Any community and business owners with private planes, contributions helping this time? 

No jail time in drug case last year, 7 months later he is back in custody on new charges

 


Yesterday, Ryan Matthew Friend was arrested by HCSO and booked for PC 1203.2(a) probation violation, PC 12022.1 committing a felony while on bail, PC 30305 (a) felon in possession of ammunition and PC 29800(a) felon in possession of a firearm.

In June 2022, Ryan Matthew Friend resolved his drug case with no jail time and one year of probation. 7 months later he is back in custody.

Convicted sex offender arrested for the third time in less than a month

 


Convicted sex offender Bartholomew Clarence Hickman was arrested for the third time yesterday by CalPoly police on an arrest warrant for PC 290.011(a),  failure to register by a transient a sex offender. He was released on O.R. again. His 2023 booking photo is not in the system.

Hickman was arrested by CalPoly police on December 22, 2022 on a foreign warrant for failure to appear in court and reckless burning. He was arrested by CalPoly police on Dec 9, 2022 for for PC 290.011(a) transient sex offender failure to register.
