On September 4, 2026, Humboldt County Correctional Deputies were alerted to an incarcerated person experiencing a serious medical emergency. Correctional Deputies and facility medical personnel immediately initiated emergency response procedures and lifesaving measures.
Upon arrival, deputies intervened in the altercation and detained 52-year-old Hoopa resident Aaron James Pole.
Recent Ferndale High School graduate Tyler Berti has been selected to receive the 2026 Caltrans District 1 Transportation Scholarship.
The $2,250 award will support Berti’s enrollment in the Heavy Equipment Operations Program at Butte College in Oroville this month. The 18-year-old said the scholarship will help him take an important step toward a career where he can make a meaningful impact.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to work outdoors, operate machinery, and contribute to projects that benefit thousands of people every day,” Berti said. “A career in transportation will allow me to combine my passion for hands-on work with my desire to serve my community.
Selected through a competitive process, Berti’s application stood out due to his background in community service, participation in extracurricular activities and commitment to pursuing a career in the transportation field.
On August 8, 2026, at approximately 12:10 a.m., a Eureka Police Department (EPD) officer responded to the area of Union Street and West Wabash Avenue for a report of a theft from a vehicle.
On July 6, 2026, following a two-week trial, a Humboldt County jury returned guilty verdicts of all charges brought against 49-year-old Troy Spencer of Myers Flat including first-degree residential burglary, criminal threats, possession of an assault weapon, being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. Additionally, the jury found two sentencing enhancements alleging he used an assault weapon in the commission of a felony and committed a residential burglary while out on bail to be true, thereby exposing him to a potential maximum of 13 years 8 months in prison under the law. Today, the Honorable Judge Kaleb V. Cockrum sentenced Spencer to serve 8 years, 4 months in prison.
On July 21, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to the 200 block of Grant Street for a report of a male attempting to gain access to a vehicle using a coat hanger.
Eureka Police Department (EPD) is transitioning its alarm billing and registration program to an internally managed process.
On July 19, 2026, at approximately 8:33 p.m., 37-year-old Levi McElroy was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility by the Eureka Police Department on charges of felony resisting/obstructing a peace officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct in public.
On July 21, 2026, at approximately 10:56 pm., officers with the Eureka Police Department (EPD) responded to 1800 block of Broadway for the report of an injury traffic collision. Upon arrival, officers located the involved vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian had major injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
As standard protocol, personnel from EPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit and Major Injury
Team responded to conduct the investigation. During the investigation, a witness was contacted.
The following are the current known facts about the collision:
• The 41-year-old, male pedestrian had been involved in altercation with another male on Fairfield and called Eureka Police Dispatch Center.
• While speaking with the Dispatcher, and despite instructed not to do so, the pedestrian stated he was walking into the roadway.
• The pedestrian walked westbound across Broadway, south of the W.Wabash intersection.
• North and southbound traffic on Broadway had a green light at W.Wabash.
• While crossing in the #2 lane (right-hand) southbound lane of Broadway, the pedestrian was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
• DUI was determined not to be a factor in this collision.
• Alcohol or impairment for the pedestrian is not known at this time.
This incident remains under active investigation.
On July 16, 2026, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) served a search warrant as a part of an investigation into illegal cannabis cultivation in the 200 block for Ware Ranch Road in the Alderpoint area. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the California Department of Cannabis Control assisted in the service of the warrants.
Michael Simon, 37, of Oakland, pleaded guilty in federal court today to Conspiracy to Commit Human Trafficking by Force, Fraud, or Coercion.
On July 6, 2026, at approximately 12:16 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a physical assault in the 2300 block of State Highway 96 at the Big Rock Day Use Area in Willow Creek.
On June 23, 2026, at approximately 9:54 a.m., an officer with the Eureka Police Department observed a white Toyota Camry traveling northbound in the 1400 block of I Street at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of traffic. The vehicle's speed was measured using LIDAR at 52 mph in a posted 30 mph zone.
When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for the driver's reckless behavior, the driver failed to yield and fled, initiating a vehicle pursuit. The pursuit was subsequently terminated due to the driver's continued reckless actions, which posed a risk to public safety.
With assistance from community members, officers quickly located the Toyota Camry abandoned in the drive-through of a vacant business in the 400 block of T Street.
Shortly thereafter, the driver, identified as 18-year-old Savannah Cringle of Arcata, exited a nearby restaurant and contacted officers. Cringle initially attempted to convince officers she had not been driving the vehicle. However, through further investigation, the pursuing officer positively identified Cringle as the driver. Cringle ultimately admitted to driving the vehicle during the pursuit.
Cringle was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, where she was booked for VC 2800.2 – Felony Evading and VC 23103 – Reckless Driving, a misdemeanor. The Toyota was towed.
Over the course of a single 12-hour shift, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) proactively conducted enforcement operations throughout Humboldt County, resulting in multiple arrests related to outstanding warrants, narcotics offenses, and other criminal activity. These actions reflect HCSO’s ongoing commitment to proactive policing strategies aimed at improving public safety and addressing crime in our communities.
