EPD responds to 4th street motel in response to report of "individual threatening suicide with a firearm"

EPD issued this just now. "approximately 8:17 a.m., Eureka Police Department (EPD) Patrol Officers responded to a motel in the 1300 block of 4th Street for a report of an individual threatening suicide with a firearm.

Due to the nature of the call, officers from EPD’s Community Safety Engagement Team (CSET) and mental health clinicians from Crisis Alternative Response of Eureka (CARE) responded to assist. CSET officers and CARE clinicians are trained in crisis negotiations.

Upon arrival, CSET officers and CARE clinicians established contact with the individual by telephone. After more than an hour of communication and negotiation, the individual agreed to exit the room and was safely detained without further incident.

The individual was transported to a local hospital for additional care.

Over the past several weeks, EPD has responded to two separate incidents involving individuals who died by suicide using a firearm. The loss of life in these circumstances is devastating and can have a lasting impact on families, friends, community members, and the first responders who respond to these incidents."
