"On September 25, 2026 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Sexually Violent Predator Merle Wakefield's (DOB: 04/10/1957) GPS device alerted to "Tamper Mode" while working in Rancho Bernardo in the City of San Diego. Wakefield is supervised by Liberty Health Care (LHC) as part of the State's Conditional Release Program. LHC responded to the scene and discovered that Wakefield's GPS had been removed and Wakefield was no longer at the location.
LHC notified the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and the San Diego Police Department.
Wakefield is currently wanted for violating the terms of his conditional release. He was convicted in 1980 and 1991 of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old and rape by force. Wakefield has been on conditional release since November 2024.
Wakefield stands 5'10" tall, weighs 230 pounds and has brown eyes.

This is why I cover SVP hearings and thanks to Senior Deputy DA Whitney Timm and Humboldt DA's office, placements of certain SVPs have failed. One of the arguments made by the Humboldt County DA and HCSO is the challenge of GPS monitoring in rural, remote Humboldt. I did a posts on Liberty HealthCare who an exclusive contract with the California Department of State Hospitals to place sexually violent predators on conditional release and how they try to release them into residential communities.
