City of Eureka contacting property owners who want to be part of future housing development

City of Eureka released this 45 minutes ago. I posted on Facebook right away but had to cjeck on news tips so posting on blog now.

"The City of Eureka is contacting property owners across the city as part of its 2027 -2035 Housing Element Update, a state-required plan that identifies where Eureka can accommodate 1,740 new homes to meet its regional housing need. Over the coming weeks, owners of certain parcels will receive a letter from the City's Development Services Department describing the opportunity to include their property in the site inventory.

Keep an eye out for a bright blue envelope in your mailbox - that's us! The City is accepting responses now through November 1, 2026.

The letter invites property owners to either sign a letter of intent or sign up for the Priority Opportunity Site Form. Signing up means that you would consider developing housing on your property between 2027 and 2035. Signing is free and voluntary. It does not commit an owner to build anything or follow a specific plan. It simply lets the City count the site toward the housing types and locations the state requires Eureka to plan for.

Property owners who sign on may also see benefits such as streamlined environmental review, faster permitting, priority for future local housing funding, priority infrastructure access, and protection from future rezoning that would reduce what they can build.

Property owners who receive a letter can respond by scanning the QR code for the online Priority Opportunity Site Form. Property owners may also call or email City staff or request an envelope to mail a letter of interest. Owners who have questions, or who did not receive a letter but 

want to learn whether their property could be included, can contact City staff directly.
