Doubt declared, criminal proceedings suspended for Shantaram Jones

Preliminary hearing for Shantaram Jones was scheduled for April 23. Jones is charged with PC 451(b)-arson of an inhabited structure or property. It was vacated after criminal proceedings were suspended today.

Deputy Conflict Counsel Owen Tipps is now Jones' attorney. During the informal calendar call, Mr. Tipps told Judge Kaleb Cockrum, "I am going to declare doubt in that matter."

When the case was formally called, Mr. Tipps summarized the previous court proceedings including Jones' repeated refusals to come to court. At the last hearing it was stated that Jones refused to cooperate with probation and he refused to acknowledge Deputy Conflict Counsel R.J. Leohner.

"I did attempt to go speak with him in jail," said Mr. Tipps. "He refused." Based on that and Mr. Tipps' review of discovery, he declared doubt.

Dr. Wilson has been appointed to evaluate Jones. Receipt of that report is scheduled for May 18.

Deputy District Attorney Tobias Hasler appeared for the People.
