Liberty Healthcare told Judge John Feeney they are unable to locate housing for sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley. The possible Tehama County placement did not pan out.
Interim Public Defender Meagan O'Connell had been representing Cooley when she was with Conflict Counsel. At her request, Conflict Counsel's office was relieved and Public Defender's office was appointed.
District Attorney Maggie Fleming and Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads appeared for the People.
Liberty Healthcare's Rafael Loya said they searched for placements in Humboldt, Tehama and Sacramento counties.
He said that "we are having difficulty finding a property" for Cooley and requested "the District appoint an agency to assist us."
DA Fleming objected. She said an individual who was formerly with Probation had assisted Liberty Healthcare with the search. She added it was not appropriate for her office to ask someone to help Liberty Healthcare.
Ms. O'Connell said she agreed with that request. She asked that HCSO or Probation assist Liberty Healthcare.
Judge Feeney said he was going to deny Mr. Loya and Ms. O'Connell's request at this time. Given the coronavirus pandemic, HCSO and Probation already have enough on their plate.
Next placement hearing is June 26. All parties except Judge Feeney and court staff appeared via Zoom today.
