St. Bernard’s Academy is thrilled to welcome new Vice Principal Agustin Valdez back to the Crusader Family.
Augie lead St. Bernard’s girls varsity basketball to back-to-back league titles in 1997-98 and 1998-99. He returns to St. Bernard's Academy after serving as the Director of Athletics and teaching physical education at Hoopa Valley High School this past school year.
Augie also represents the Humboldt Del-Norte league as a member of the newly formed North Coast Section Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. Prior to Hoopa Valley, Augie was the Dean of Students, Director of Athletics and Physical Education chair at the Quarry Lane School in Dublin. In his role as the dean, he was in charge of student discipline, student safety, assemblies for both middle and high school students, and all student-clubs. In his role as AD and PE Chair, he was in charge of scheduling games, hiring coaches, transportation, hiring and evaluating coaches, developing curriculum that incorporated SEL and UDL principals, and overseeing the entire athletic department. Augie also served as the director of athletics and student activities at Park Day School in Oakland. He served on a variety of school committees, lead the athletic program, and planned outdoor education for the middle school.
Augie will be teaming with St. Bernard’s legend and recent Seattle University graduate, Makenna Schoenhofer, to take over the Crusader varsity girls basketball program. After stepping in to help with the 2020-21 Covid-19-shortened basketball season, State Champion Coach Matt Tomlin will be returning his focus to leading the football and baseball programs at St. Bernard’s. Makenna played in 24 games for the Division I Redhawks in 2020-21 and is excited to be returning to Crusaderville to mentor our student athletes. Makenna led SBA to league, NCS section, and NorCal titles while starring at St. Bernard’s. Augie has been a head basketball coach at the high school and college level for the past 21 years. This past season he was the boys coach at Hoopa Valley High School and before that, the director of girls basketball at Alameda High School.
St. Bernard’s principal/president Paul Shanahan: “I’ve known Augie for over 30 years and I know our SB family is getting a leader who will have an immediate impact on our community. I’m excited to help Augie get a step closer to his goal of becoming a high school principal. He has a great mentor in former superintendent and SBA Co-principal Catherine Scott. I couldn’t be happier for our students and our teachers.”
Shanahan added, “When I heard from Coach Tomlin that Makenna was interested in coaching at St. Bernard’s, I called her immediately. I am so excited to welcome Makenna's leadership, Division I experience, family-centered approach, generous spirit, and unparalleled grit and work ethic back to SBA. She will be a blessing for every athlete in our program."
