If you are local, Tim and Dorice Miranda need no introduction. Miranda Dairy has been providing quality products for three generations to Humboldt.
What started a research to help the Miranda's grandson has developed into a product helping many others.
Today, I spoke with both of them about their A2 milk and the Western Organic Family Farms Cooperative. The Mirandas and five other local dairies create this niche product which is available at several local grocery stores and is produced locally.
"We are trying to make dairy sustainable," said Tim Miranda. "We are bringing a product to people that will help them."
"Our milk does not have the A 1 protein," said Tim Miranda. "If you are lactose intolerant, you can drink the A 2 milk. We DNA test all our animals."
Cows can produce A 1/1, A1/2 or A 2/2 protein. The A 2-2 milk protein is what Western Organic Family Farms offers.
Tim Miranda said there has been positive feedback from people varying from "no more upset stomach" to "I had milk in 30 years.
"Our co-op is woman run and women owned," said Tim Miranda. "The women run the co-op. The men run the farms."
The CEO is Dorice Miranda. Robin Griffith is the CFO. Both have years of experience in organic, dairy and accounting. In addition to the experience all the women bring; add a licensed veterinarian.
The A 2/2 milk is available at Murphy's Market, Ray's, Valley Grocery and other Ferndale stores.
A 2/2 milk is ultra-pasteurized with a 90 day shelf life.
There is a dairy in Texas but all the A 2/2 milk is produced in Humboldt. "There is one dairy in Arcata and four in Ferndale, " said Dorice Miranda.
"There are a lot of people who don't know about A 2/2 milk but we are getting the word out there," said Dorice Miranda.
