Sentencing continued for Jeff Tsarnas and motion for new trial filed

A no bail warrant was issued for Jeff Tsarnas last week because there was no appearance by Jeff Tsarnas or his attorney. Tsarnas was present in court today.

As I reported at the last hearing, Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke was in another courtroom on another case had the bailiff checked. That issue was not even addressed and would have been ignored until Ms. Van Dyke brought it up.

Ms. Van Dyke said that Tsarnas has been "in great communication" with her. "I hope the Court will not hold any bench warrant against him."

The defense had filed a motion to continue. There is no opposition by the People. Deputy District Attorney Jessica Acosta appeared on the case for the People.

The motion to continue sentencing was granted and the motion for new trial will be addressed on the same day; July 26.

"We are interviewing some witnesses," said Ms. Van Dyke.

A jury found Tsarnas guilty of  VC 20001 (a), hit and run involving injury or death. Defense was going to file a motion for new trial.
