Murder suspect Brandon Watson' girlfriend/wife Jennifer Mahoney testified for the People today. She still cares about Watson, they have a child together.
Compared to his friend Jamal Lowery who did not say anything incriminating about Watson but his evasiveness because he is on parole does raise issues about credibility, Mahoney was more forthcoming.
She answered honestly and some of her answers could benefit the People. She said Watson and Lowery showed up wearing different clothes in the early am. They left from her house the night before to go to the Jambalaya. Mahoney testified about Watson's injuries and said that he was incoherent.
Watson claimed people were looking for him, mentioned gangs and wanting to get out of the area.
In her testimony, Mahoney said that she told Arcata Police Department that she did not know anything and wanted a lawyer and did not want to speak with them twice but the third time they said they could search her house anyway and she had three children at home. She claimed that they showed up at her house 15 times and that they rephrased what she said and wrote down things without her consent.
I always thought Gaylia Wilson's plea deal did not make sense. Her co-defendant got 18 years in prison. She got her plea deal for three years of probation. Wilson pleaded guilty to PC 273 (a), child endangerment. This is a felony conviction. This woman housed not one but two child molestors and allowed them to victimize two young girls under her care. The girls called her "Gigi."
Watson used to be Wilson's neighbor. He offered her $300 to give him a ride to San Francisco; turned to her for help. She tricked him and drove him to a gas station where the police were waiting to arrest him.
Video from Wilson's Ring doorbell with parts inaudible and audio from APD Detective Luke Scown which was also inaudible was played for the jury. Video obtained from Hensel's Hardware was shown to the jury during APD Victoria Johnson. Video time-stamped 1:37 a.m. shows Watson entering the frame in the alley. 911 call was made at 1:39 a.m.
More video footage was far away from the Jambalaya and Det. Johnson said, hard to identify who "but we can see a large group of people" and then "a small group break away from the large group."
Video shows "Bo" Triantos knock the hat off Watson's head. Then Triantos walks into the alley swinging his arms. Mr. Rees identified the people in the video, the quality of the video makes it very hard to identify people and when you can see someone, they are tiny objects on the screen.
We spent three minutes watching Mr. Rees flip through pages to ask Detective Johnson about some text messages between Mahoney and Watson on October 26, 2018 that indicated nothing about a murder. "OMG"; "I love you all so much" "You look like a pumpkin" and "I should have never walked out that door."
Ms. Sullivan had no questions for Det. Johnson.
So far, the People have presented questionable witnesses, including two convicted criminals; bad audio, terrible video and a claim that APD wrote down and misrepresented statements by allegedly intimidating the defendant's girlfriend.
The murder charge is from a 2018 incident and the 2016 incident was tacked on later when there is no connection between the two incidents and alleged victims.
