There is high definition video of the defendant shooting a person who was not a threat to him."

Today, a heavily medicated Matthew Ramsey entered an additional plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Ramsey told Judge Lawrence Killoran that he understands he faces a potential life term in the state hospital.

This was after Ramsey's attorney put the People on the spot about resolution discussions in court.

I have written before about Mr. Russ Clanton's latest strategy in several cases that started months ago. Using the not guilty by reason of insanity defense. Today, he continued that template and used virtually the same argument and words for attempted murder suspect Ramsey that he did yesterday for Ryan Tanner's case.

The People made an offer to resolve the case which was basically "an open plea to 19 years in prison."

Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal said, I understand the mental health aspect but I cannot offer anything else. There is high definition video of the defendant shooting a person who was not a threat to him."

Dr. Andrew Renouf and Dr. Jennifer Wilson were appointed at County expense to evaluate Ramsey. That report is due August 4. A written motion to continue the current jury trial has to be filed and will be heard on July 1.

Mr. Bernthal said he was not given notice about the dual plea and needed to notify the victim about the request for continuance.

Every attorney has some cases that resolve with pleas and some do not. If people follow this blog or pay attention in the community, then they know how many of Mr. Clanton's clients are in prison, have had pleas or had to agree to this not guilty by reason of insanity. Who you chose as your lawyer matters. Who recommends that lawyer to you makes a difference. Chose your lawyer based on their record; not smooth talking.
