Joshua Cooley hearing still not started, hallway is packed

District Attorney Maggie Fleming filed a motion today to have Judge John Feeney reconsider his original ruling to release sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley from the State Hospital into the community.

There has been resistance and outrage from the community. After denying placement in Freshwater and Garberville, Judge John Feeney ordered Cooley to be placed in Eureka on transient release.  Eureka community members, officials and law enforcement are against this placement.

The DA's position on why Cooley should not be released, the defense position on why he should be released, Liberty Health Care information and concerns, the position of law enforcement and the concerns of community members have been written about several times.

If you have not been following the detailed and exclusive coverage of this case on my blog, please check the posts linked below.

Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman is here. Eureka Councilmembera Kim Bergel and Heidi Messner are here. EPD Chief Steve Watson, Captain Brian Stephens,Patrick O'Neill  and several EPD officers are here. About 20 community members are here so far.  Three Eureka City officials and EPD staff added another 20 people in attendance.

DA Maggie Fleming, Deputy DA Stacey Eads, DA Investigator Kyla Baxley are here. The hearing hasn't even late since court staff had to set up, now are we are waiting for Conflict Counsel Supervising Attorney Meagan O'Connell. They won't let anyone in the BOS chambers until she is here and Judge Feeney gets to talk to attorneys first.
