How much attention do people pay to endorsements from the political and business community?
With the judicial candidates for this year, the endorsements are not strictly partisan. Both Deputy District Attorney Steve Steward and Deputy Public Defender Ben McLaughlin have diverse support.
DA Maggie Fleming had support from diverse supporters and people with different political views. Ms. Eads' endorsements and coalition of supporters are similar however I wish her endorsers Rex Bohn, Michelle Bushnell and former Eureka Councilmembers would keep their clutches out of the courts. There is enough politics and Humboldt connected tainting the local criminal justice system.
If you want sex trafficers, child abusers, child molestors and rapists held accountable, there isn't even a question who you should vote for; it is Ms. Eads. If you want someone who is professional and has capabilities to manage people; the choice is Ms. Eads. No candidate is perfect, you pick the one most qualified for the job.
Deputy Public Defender Adrian Kamada has Rob Arkley as an endorser and a few other conservative/moderate endorsements. His wife Amy Hunt works for the Mitchell Law Firm and her law firm endorsed him. Mostly Kamada's endorsements are from people sharing liberal and progressive views. Was Rob aware of the Humboldt Progressive Democrats, EPIC and progressive endorsements and vice versa were the union and environmental groups aware of Kamada's other endorsements?
Kamada's friendship with Judge Elvine-Kreis and his employment and friendships with the Public Defenders office, especially with the current lawsuits against Elvine-Kreis, former Public Defender Marek Reavis, current Public Defender Lule Brownfield, Kamada' abrupt exit from the District Attorney's office despite Kamada's spin, should concern voters. He left that office after he botched Ray Christie's first trial which resulted in a mistrial. The voter who questioned him about the Tanner case should keep that in mind as they read Kamada's response. His experience, cavalier attitude about being in court and lack of experience compared to Ms. Eads and Michael Acosta make Kamada the weakest candidate. He was not a deputy district attorney, his mindset is that of a public defender and he should not be District Attorney. Kamada's entire campaign is based on blaming the current DA and the DA's office. If he had a record of being tough on crime and of public safety, that is what he should be talking about then dissing his former colleagues.
Politics does make strange bedfellows. The other local media hasn't a clue about the legal, political, business connections and even if they do, how much relevant information have they provided to you this election? How much of the Humboldt connected news do they provide you? There are a few people who read just one or two sources but more voters read a variety. Ads make a lot of money for radio, tv and certain connected media sources but they are just background noise. They don't make or break an election nor do they bring you business. Lot of factors will determine who gets elected in local elections on June 7, 2022.
