Humboldt Kiters are hosting the second annual Redwood Kite Festival this Saturday May 20 and Sunday May 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Locals and visitors of all skill levels are invited to come down to Halvorsen Park to participate.
The Redwood Coast Kite Festival celebrates science, technology, art, mathematics, and the great outdoors through the art of flying kites. The event will offer live kiting workshops, demonstrations, and various types of single line kites, dual line sport kites, and dual line parafoil kites. Giant show kites will be flying and visible from the viewers gallery as well.
The Redwood Coast Kite Festival will include an artisan fair with vendors, and new to the festival this year will be a variety of food trucks and providers as well as a health and wellness center, and a kid’s kite corner for free kite making for kids 3-12 years old (must be accompanied by an adult).
“Last year we had beautiful weather and we saw every type of kite from quad line precision single flyers to single lines and bowls,” said festival organizer Mark Ahrens. “I’m hoping that people can come together and celebrate kite flying and learn something new in the process. May is also California’s mental health awareness month, so we hope this event provides a space for the community to unwind, too.”
The event is free and open to the public and the festival brings together kite enthusiasts of all levels from first-time flyers to competitive kiters and all ranges in between. Volunteers and experts will be available to teach anyone the basics of flying a kite. For more information about the festival, go to Visit Eureka.com.
