365 days jail imposed for former Eureka High School coach, may have to register as a sex offender

Former Eureka High School employee and convicted rapist Thomas Gowing pleaded guilty on April 11 and resolved his case before his preliminary hearing.

Sentencing proceeded today was 365 days in jail, 2 years probation. At Jane Doe's request for sex offender registration, matter referred to probation for report. That report and ruling on June 6.  The registration request was made today by Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer and not a part of the stipulated plea.

Commit to jail date on June 17. Jane Doe contacted Gowing pending sentencing according to Deputy Public Defender Ben McLaughlin. Gowing already has another job.

The plea agreement was plead guilty to count 1, ct 2, 3 and 4 reduced under 17 (b) ESS/NOP, 2 years probation and 1 year custody cap.

Due to the custody cap, even though Judge Hinrichs sentenced Hinrichs to 2 years, he got 365 days imposed.

Jane Doe was in court with her mother, father, grandfather and two other supporters. Gowing was in court with an older woman, I assume his mother.

I did not hear Judge Hinrichs clarify if he is SWAP eligible that was opposed by the people.

6/6: Gowing will be not required to register as a sex offender.

6/17: Gowing booked into jail.
