Closing arguments just concluded this morning in convicted rapist Kailan Meserve's habeas corpus case. Judge Kaleb Cockrum has taken the matter under submission and will issue a ruling on 8/4/23.
I covered Meserve's rape case, every hearing in detail and the trial. I was the only one to do so. I had to ask other local media to atleast show up for sentencing and they did. Those were the days we had some decent reporters and we all helped each other.The only local media outlet to avoid any coverage of Meserve's rape trial was North Coast Journal.
I heard from many people. I know the witnesses who were involved and many others in the community. I know the original prosecutor and Meserve's trial defense attorney.
I don't need the trial relitigated and Meserve's current attorney's spin to know the facts. This writ of habeas corpus case is just Meserve's way of still avoiding responsibility. Meserve's attorney asked that his client remain in Humboldt County jail until the ruling. Hopefully, Meserve will return to prison soon where he belongs.
