All these law enforcement resources and just one arrest? Who decides who gets booked and arrested and who is not for similar charges?
HCDTF Press Release:
On Wednesday, April 28th, 2021 agents with the Humboldt County Drug Task Force (HCDTF), with the assistance of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), and Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department (HVTPD), served one search warrant and conducted two probation searches in the Hoopa Valley. These investigations were not related to each other.
Search Warrant:
At approx. 1045 hrs. agents served a search warrant on a 17-year-old juvenile on Pine Creek Rd. in Hoopa. This investigation was a follow up to a previous Fentanyl overdose death that had occurred in Hoopa. Agents collected electronic evidence related to the overdose investigation.
A relative of the juvenile, Greg Nelson (64 years old), was found to be in possession of one ounce of methamphetamine, a digital scale, and packaging. The following charges will be forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for Nelson
• H&S 11366 Maintaining or operating a drug house
• H&S 11378 Possession of methamphetamine for sale
Probation Search #1:
As a result of multiple community complaints of suspected drug activity agents conducted a probation search on Madelyn McCovey (39 years old) on Carpenter Ln. in Hoopa. Inside of McCovey’s bedroom agents located 5 pre-packaged bags of methamphetamine and additional packaging material. These bags are commonly referred to as “20 sacks” on the street as they are small amounts that sell for $20 a bag. The following charges will be forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office against McCovey:
• H&S 11366 Maintaining or operating a drug house
• H&S 11378 Possession of methamphetamine for sale
Probation Search #2:
As a result of multiple community complaints of suspected drug activity agents conducted a probation search on Thomas Perry (28 years old) on Big Hill Rd. in Hoopa. Perry was currently out of jail on bail for a felon in possession of firearm arrest in early April. During a search of the residence agents located one ounce of methamphetamine, one ounce of heroin, Xanax pills, 3 digital scales, a .22 caliber rifle, and ammunition for a .45 caliber handgun.
Thomas Perry was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Jail for the following charges:
• H&S 11366 Maintaining or operating a drug house
• H&S 11378 Possession of methamphetamine for sale
• H&S 11351 Possession of controlled substances for sale
• PC 29800(a)(a) Felon in possession of a firearm
• PC 30305(a) Felon in possession of ammunition
• PC 12022.1 Committing a felony while out on bail
