Starting May 1, non-standard burn permit holders will need a CAL Fire burn permit

Effective May 1, 2021, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Humboldt - Del Norte Unit requires Non-Standard Burn Permit holders in State Responsibility Areas, obtain a CAL FIRE Burn Permit (LE-5).

A North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (NCUAQMD) burn permit is required any time you burn vegetation.   The CAL FIRE Humboldt – Del Norte Unit wants to emphasize the importance of following all burning regulations and ensuring controlled burns do not escape and become wildland fires.  Escaped debris burns are a frequent cause of wildland fires and often result from:  lack of clearance, burning when windy, or failing to remain in attendance.  Residents must remain vigilant while burning as conditions this year are abnormally dry.  Dry conditions across the state have contributed to twice as many acres burned in California this year compared to the same time last year.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CAL FIRE and NCUAQMD facilities have restricted access in the interest of public and staff safety. To obtain a CAL FIRE LE-5 Burn Permit, contact your nearest CAL FIRE station by telephone and a permit can be mailed to you.  The permit will not be valid until signed by the permit holder. CAL FIRE may require an on-site inspection prior to permit issuance.  CAL FIRE Stations

Burn permits are required year around by NCUAQMD.  NCUAQMD permits can be obtained on-line at  ncuaqmd.org, or by calling (707) 443-3093.
