James Nyberg, who according to a 2004 article, is the son of a former Fortuna mayor had a preliminary hearing scheduled this morning. It was continued to June 2 because defense has not received body cam footage requested.
Nyberg is charged with VC23153 (g), driving under combined influence of drugs and alcohol, VC23153 (a), DUI and VC 23153 (b), driving with a BAC of .08 or higher.
Nyberg is represented by Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo. Mr. Patrik Griego represents the alleged victim.
Now that I posted this, will LOCO and TS follow up on cases I report first and they suddenly see value in covering or will they look the other way as they do often if the coverage is inconvenient and involves someone local well such as Rick Littlefield, Kailan Meserve and other examples I have mentioned. They certainly dont mind covering and running booking photos of the average Joe/Jane.
From North Coast Journal article (2004):
EXPLOSION WITNESS ARRESTED: A parolee and son of a former mayor who was wanted for questioning following a Fortuna motel explosion was on his way to San Quentin Tuesday after turning himself in to police on Sept. 16. James Nyberg, 33, son of Phil Nyberg -- Fortuna's mayor from 1996-2002 -- was seen leaving the National 9 Inn immediately after the Sept. 11 blast that killed Charles Douthitt, 41, of Fortuna, police said. The younger Nyberg, who was a friend of the deceased man, was arrested on a parole violation. Fortuna police said that he had not been questioned by law enforcement because he was awaiting advice of an attorney. Police said that an "explosive device" was the cause of the blast but declined to release further details.
