I reached out to the Sgt on duty and was able to talk to him briefly. I was able to confirm the incident but it was a burglary, not home invasion.
HCSO PIO Samantha Karges provided this information in response to my inquiry:
"On May 4, 2019, at about 11 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the report of a burglary in progress at a residence on the 1900 block of Holly Drive, McKinleyville.
Upon arrival, deputies contacted several neighbors who had witnessed the burglary occurring and called law enforcement. Deputies learned that two unknown male suspects accessed the residence via an unlocked door.
The suspects were observed by neighbors attempting to steal a gun safe. When confronted by the neighbors, the suspects fled in a silver Chevy Equinox.
The suspect vehicle was later located on May 5 at a residence on the 1900 block of Elm Ave, McKinleyville. Deputies were unable to locate associated suspects at that residence or in the area.
The suspects are believed to have stolen over $5,000 in items from the residence, including cash and a firearm.
One suspect is described as a white male adult, possibly in his 20’s. wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt with red lettering.
The second suspect is described as a male adult, possibly in his 20’s, wearing black pants and a black zip up sweatshirt."
