Frequently arrested and convicted felon Markis Shirley's jury trial is scheduled for May 24. He had three cases on calendar today.
Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm appeared on the case for the People. Mr. Zach Curtis is Shirley's attorney.
Mr. Curtis has another case that takes precedent over Shirley. Five cases have been assigned to Judge Kaleb Cockrum. Mr. Curtis' other case is trailing and #2 and Shirley is trailing that case and the last one in line.
Attorneys are meeting with Judge Cockrum this afternoon.
5/24: Shirley withdrew his time waiver. Trial assignment is on 5/28. A motion filed by the DA is scheduled for June 1; trial confirmation is on July 6 and jury trial on July 12.
5/28: Mr. Curtis' other case is #1 this week and was confirmed today. Shirley is #2 and "trailing" that case. It has been assigned to Judge Timothy Canning but Deputy District Attorney Shelly Small said the people plan to file a 170.6 motion.
A motion to amend information has been filed in one of Shirley's cases.
Shirley knows his criminal history and still interrupts every court proceeding with some ridiculous statement.
His offer of two years to be doubled with admitting to a two year prior was rejected. Deputy District Attorney Shelly Small told Judge Joyce Hinrichs that Shirley is facing "25 to life"; the People made a generous offer which Shirley rejected. They told him any resolution would have to include a double digit sentence.
6/23: I have to stop covering Shirley. He has a lot of cases and too many continuances and court access had been closed until today. There was a motion to amend in one case; he was held to answer in another case on all charges except Count 2 and there are just too many cases with the constant repeat criminals, new arrests and court backlog to keep wasting time on this career criminal.
