With the sentencing of one more defendant, the Claros family can take one more step towards healing

Sentencing is scheduled for Cesar Valenzuela this morning. This is a plea agreement with a stipulated sentence for 13 years.

Claros' family has spoken at sentencing for previous defendants.

On August 21, Valenzuela entered a guilty plea to PC 215 (a) carjacking and the special allegation PC 12022.5, use a firearm during the commission of the crime. The plea agreement was for 9 years for the carjacking charge and 4 years for the special allegation. Valenzuela waived his right to appeal.

Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo is Valenzuela's attorney. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prosecutor for the case.

Valenzuela is the last defendant from the Manila 5 homicide to resolve his case. Victim is Tyson Claros.

Valenzuela had a 2015 domestic violence case that had a review scheduled. No petition to revoke probation had been filed as of the last hearing. If probation hasn't expired, Judge Christopher Wilson said he intends to just let it expire.

Valenzuela was sentenced as stipulated. Restitution hearing is on November 13.
