Once again Shantaram Jones refused to come to court today for his arraignment. Judge Christopher Wilson asked Correctional Deputy B. Mendes to give him more information. She said, according to the housing officer, Jones refusal is based on his impression that "a lawyer is going to appear for him and he is not needed."
Judge Wilson mentioned that Jones has "consistently refused to come to court."
There was some discussion about whether the Public Defender or Conflict Counsel should represent him with input from Deputy Conflict Counsel Owen Tipps and Deputy Public Defender Jessica Bennett.
Judge Wilson said, "perhaps our interim PD can help with that," and via Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke, it was conveyed that this is a Conflict Counsel case.
It seems Jones may have been evaluated for PC 1368 before. He does have at least one local case and was "last represented" by the Public Defender in 2019.
PC 1368 is declaring a doubt as to defendant’s mental competency to stand trial.

The Conflict Counsel's office was appointed. Bail was set at $75,000. Arraignment was continued again to tomorrow.
