Known gang member on probation arrested on weapon charges

On 11-22-2019 at about 2:55 AM, a Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputy noticed a Honda sedan pulling out of the Eagle Peak Middle School in Redwood Valley, California.

The Deputy noticed a vehicle code violation on the Honda and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle as a result.

When the Deputy walked up to the vehicle, the Deputy recognized the driver and sole occupant as Daniel Ayala. The Deputy had prior knowledge Ayala was known to carry weapons and is a known gang member.

The Deputy further knew Ayala had been recently placed on formal probation for a prior weapons charge. Sheriff's Office dispatch confirmed the probation, which included a term of "no firearms".

During the contact, the Deputy observed the grip of a handgun under the front driver's seat. The gun was found to be a loaded Smith and Wesson semi-automatic 9mm handgun.

Ayala was arrested for 25850(C)(3) PC (Criminal Street Gang Member Carrying a Loaded Firearm), 25400(A)(1) PC (Concealed Weapon in Vehicle), 25850(C)(6) PC (Loaded Handgun not the Registered Owner), and 1203.2 PC (Violation of Probation) without incident.

Ayala was booked into the Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held in lieu of $55,000.00 bail.
