Catholic Church leaders describe $600,000 in church funds sent during sexual abuse investigation of McCarrick as customary gifts

(McCarrick)

Disgraced and defrocked  Theodore McCarrick sent $600,000 in church funds to 100 high ranking Catholic Church officials while he faced sexual abuse allegations and the Catholic church was criticized for failing to act on McCarrick’s alleged misbehavior.

Several of these church leaders were directly in charge of assessing claims against him, according to an article that was published by the Washington Post.

While serving as archbishop, McCarrick pulled money from an account at the Archdiocese of Washington. Recipients of funds from McCarrick included Pope John Paul II who received $90,00  and Pope Benedict XVI who received $291,000.

Clerics told the Washington Post that the money did not have any impact on the church’s decision-making, describing the funds as “customary gifts among Catholic leaders” during Christmas time or as a “gesture of appreciation.”
