Patricio Segura made his stepdaughter consume meth to calm her down while he sexually abused her

Yesterday, Judge Kaleb Cockrum sentenced convicted molestor Patricio Segura to the stipulated term of 8 years. The victim is his stepdaughter. Segura resolved his case six days after his jury trial started.

Segura waived his right to appeal and waived his custody credits upto the day of sentencing. The plea deal is for a stipulated term of 8 years for pleading guilty to forcible oral copulation.

Segura was facing 7 counts before the plea deal. Restitution to the victim was reserved. Segura has to register as a sex offender for life. Upon release, he can be placed on parole for upto 15 years.

After remarks by Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads and Deputy Public Defender Wade Orbelian, Judge Cockrum imposed the minimum court fines so any money earned in custody would go towards restitution and towards supporting the four other children who are Segura's biological children.

Segura's wife walked into her kitchen to find Segura sitting in a chair and Jane Doe was on her knees performing oral sex on him. Segura's wife threw him out of the house and immediately called the police.

Ms. Eads said that Segura made his stepdaughter consume intoxicants, including meth, to calm her down to facilitate his sexual abuse. "On one occasion, he gave her meth via water; another time he made her smoke it."

"The life imprisonment he initially faced wouldn't even come close to the damage he caused," said Ms. Eads. "For the well being of her children and so her teenage daughter would not hace to testify to the sexual abuse she endured for two years," Jane Doe's mother agreed to the resolution.

Yesterday, Segura's wife, family and supporters sat on one side of the room. Segura's family on the other side. The devastating effect this has on both families was evident when Jane Doe's statement was read. Her mother sobbed and even Segura's side of the family had tears.

Throughout the case, Segura has remained defiant, unrepentant and yesterday was no exception.

Despite Segura's wife speaking through an interpreter and a victim witness' advocate reading Jane Doe's statement, their words were powerful. Mr. Carlos Santana was the certified court interpreter.

"When I was little, I never thought I'd get hurt because I had a mom and dad," said Jane Doe. "My dad couldn't protect me because he hurt me. He sexually abused me. I cried every night because of him. I hated him. There was a time I wanted to die. I was a bird in a cage who couldn't be free."

With Segura in custody,Jane Doe said,"now she is free and strong" and she doesn't get raped. "Just because I got raped, it doesn't mean I will be scared of guys." She mentioned a guy she is dating who is supportive of her and understanding. While she doesn't ever want to see Segura again; she does not hate him anymore.

"I can't find the words to describe the pain," said Segura's wife. "I just want to say my life is no longer the same. The worldI believed I had was a lie. I didn't think I could be brave to speak today. I havemany things to say but they are not appropriate."

Before he sentenced Segura, Judge Cockrum said, "The first thing I'd like to say to Jane Doe and her mother  is that I have never been in the position you have been so I cannot say I understand. I am impressed with your bravery.
Sometimes taking a case to trial can bemore damaging than resolving a case."
