"I am sick of my apartment. Get me out of this prison. For three goddamn years."

Fifteen other people besides me live in my apartment complex. I only moved here a couple of months ago. Yet, for over an hour, they did nothing while an older disabled lady who lives downstairs screamed.

"I am sick of my apartment. Get me out of this prison. For three goddamn years."

Not even the one neighbor who checks on her sometimes. That neighbor finally went down after I called EPD for a welfare check. Officer Swanson had already arrived on scene. Finally, she got help. Officer Ryan Swanson is wonderful and he just left with her.

At first, I thought it was someone in the alley. I am tired of being the only one to call EPD when there are tweakers or other issues.

I finally opened my door and saw who it was; there have never been any issues with this lady. I called EPD because the woman was not in a condition to be approached. She barely knows me.

Once again, the amazing EPD dispatchers answered the call and took prompt action. At what point is the current City Council and Board of Supervisors going to take any meaningful action for the most vulnerable?

Excuses for not funding Laura's law. Excuses for lack of affordable housing. Excuses for crime. Passing the buck off to DHHS or someone else instead of doing the job they were elected for and promises they made during their campaigns. The failure is on both sides of the political aisle. Meanwhile, we have the rest of the local media doing fluff PR pieces on these officials instead of any real accountability. When you allow the husband of a current Board of Supervisor to write a cut and paste column with the same rants and no news value, you lose the right to be called media.

Law enforcement is for public safety. If the elected officials arent doing their job then their  Supervisor salaries and Council stipends should go towards law enforcement budgets. Don't keep raising taxes on the working class and businesses without using the money you have wisely.

It is not my job or others who do our part daily in making a difference in the community to fix these systemic issues. Those who get paid to deal with these issues and are elected need to step up. The silence of those in the community who keep expecting me and a few others to always speak up and take risks but just sit there in apathy are a part of the problems in Humboldt. Some of you are content to reap the benefits as long as you do nothing and risk nothing.
