On Feb. 13, 2021, at about 12:35 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a business on the 22,800 block of State Highway 96 for the report of a gunshot victim that had just arrived at the location.
Deputies arrived on scene and located a 32-year-old male with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The male was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Upon further investigation, deputies learned that the shooting occurred at a property on Upper Cappell Road near Weitchpec. According to witnesses, the suspects reportedly followed the victim to the Upper Cappell Road property and confronted him for reasons still under investigation. An altercation occurred, during which the suspects reportedly fired multiple shots toward the victim, one of which striking and injuring him.
The suspects were later identified as relatives of the victim, 51-year-old Frederick William Lewis and 31-year-old Derrick Anthony Lewis.
While still investigating, deputies were notified that Hoopa Valley Tribal Police officers had located Frederick Lewis at a business in Hoopa. Lewis was taken into custody without incident.
Frederick Lewis was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of assault with a firearm on a person (PC 245(A)(2)), discharge of a firearm in gross neglect (PC 2463(A)), exhibiting a firearm (PC 417(A)(2)), felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(A)(1)) and conspiracy to commit a crime (PC 182(a)(1)).
Derrick Lewis remains outstanding at this time and is wanted on charges of attempted murder. Lewis is described as an American Indian male adult, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, 189 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
Update: In the afternoon of Feb. 16, 2021, wanted attempted homicide suspect Derrick Anthony Lewis, age 31, turned himself in to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Lewis was wanted in connection to a shooting near Weitchpec on February 13 which left one person injured.
Lewis was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder (PC 664/187), assault with a firearm on a person (PC 245(a)(2)), conspiracy to commit a crime (PC 182(a)(1)), exhibiting a firearm (PC 417(a)(2)) and discharging a firearm in gross neglect (PC 2463(a)).
