Initial witness statements in 5th and S collision were inaccurate

After interviewing additional witnesses and obtaining surveillance video from nearby businesses, the Eureka Police Department is issuing an investigative update to the vehicle versus pedestrian collision that occurred on February 16, 2021 at 5th and S Streets.

Initial witness statements obtained at the scene had indicated the victim pedestrian suddenly stepped into the roadway and path of the oncoming vehicle. Surveillance video since obtained by EPD investigators has revealed these preliminary statements were inaccurate.

The pedestrian was clearly in the marked crosswalk and almost fully across 5th Street when the 79-year-old driver of the involved vehicle struck him. This incident will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review upon completion of the investigation and report.

At the time of this release, the pedestrian remains hospitalized in critical condition. Chief Steve Watson: “The City of Eureka and Eureka Police Department remain committed to improving traffic safety for our pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
