Did you know that before EPD was formed, Eureka had a Town Marshall who enforced the law against "rowdies", drunks and hogs

Eureka was founded in May 13, 1850,  incorporated as a town in April 18, 1856 and reincorporated as a city on February 19,1874.

It wasn't until Eureka was rechartered in 1895 that Eureka Police Department was formed. This July is EPD's 125th anniversary.

EPD Detective Richard Bise was at Eureka City Hall verifying some research while I was there on other business.

John Atcheson was the only town marshall. There were four city marshalls. Former chiefs of police include Frank Edwin and William McKay. EPD Chief Steve Watson is Eureka's 19th police chief.

Atcheson was directed to enforce laws against "rowdies" and drunks; enforce laws against the lumber mills and levy fines for piling sawdust on the streets of Eureka and keep all the hogs, pigs and shoats off the streets. Owners of the animals were fined a $1. If the owner did not claim the animal, it was sold at a public auction.
