On January 12, HCSO issued a press release with more information:
On Jan. 11, 2020, at about 6:26 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center was contacted regarding two mushroom hunters who had not returned home.
According to the reporting party, 34-year-old Gavin McFarlin and his nine-year-old son, Kieran McFarlin, had not returned home after a day of mushroom hunting in the Big Lagoon area. The two were last seen around 11:33 a.m.
A vehicle associated with the McFarlins was located along Highway 101 south of Big Lagoon. Deputies searched a large area of property believed to be where the two were last possibly located but were unable to locate the missing persons. Search and Rescue personnel remained on scene throughout the night and, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Posse, are continuing a full search this morning, January 12.
Gavin McFarlin is described as a white male adult, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He is possibly wearing a black Giants baseball cap, a hooded sweatshirt or rain jacket and hiking boots.
Kieran McFarlin is described as a white male juvenile, approximately 4 feet tall, 75 pounds, with short blonde hair and hazel eyes. He is possibly wearing dark colored Adidas track pants and hiking boots.
HCSO update to press release:
The two missing persons were located around 9:45 a.m. by a passerby driving on U.S. Highway 101. The two subjects told deputies that they had been mushroom hunting when they got lost in the woods. Due to darkness, the two stayed put and made shelter in the woods until daybreak, at which time they were able to hike back out to the highway. The two were located several miles south of their vehicle. They were evaluated and treated on scene by medical personnel for cold exposure.
