"You can fix someone who has issues with alcohol. You can fix someone with drug issues. You cannot fix someone like him"

With his hair cropped short and having gained weight since he has been in custody,  Raymond Lee Hayden looks nothing like his booking photo.

He stood silently as Jane Doe's mother holding Jane Doe's hand addressed Judge Christopher Wilson. 7 days after Jane Doe's sixth birthday, Hayden started sexually abusing her.

"You can fix someone who has issues with alcohol. You can fix someone with drug issues. You cannot fix someone like him. A child predator who gets out and gets to live in society.  You better be happy with what you got because you deserve way less."

Seeing Jane Doe elicited an emotional reaction in the audience. As Hayden left the courtroom, one man expressed his disgust and called him a "pos."

Hayden was charged with Count 1, oral copulation/sexual penetration with a child 10 years old or younger. The alleged act was oral copulation with Jane Doe. Count 2 was Lewd act upon a child.

Hayden entered a plea on December 13 to an added count 3, PC 287 (c) (2) (b) to a stipulated prison sentence of 12 years, which is the upper term. He has to serve 85 percent of that sentence.

Hayden waived his appellate rights and half his custody credits. Upon release, he can be on parole for 20 years  6 months. He has to register as a sex offender for life.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prosecutor for this case. Deputy Conflict Counsel Owen Tipps is Hayden's attorney.

PC 287 (c) (2) (b):
(B) Any person who commits an act of oral copulation upon a person who is under 14 years of age, when the act is accomplished against the victim’s will by means of force, violence, duress, menace, or fear of immediate and unlawful bodily injury on the victim or another person, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for 8, 10, or 12 years.
