Stephen Chiara held to answer for death of Max Hadley



After his preliminary hearing, Solano County Superior Court Judge William J. Pendergast held Stephen Chiara to answer on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence, DUI causing bodily injury and driving without a license.

The victim, Max Hadley, was quoted as his fiancee according to a media report that was reprinted in the local paper. Other sources in Humboldt claimed they were engaged when the original post was published on this blog, however that claim is disputed by her daughter.

Hadley, who was an investigator with the Public Defender's Office. Hadley was a passenger on Chiara's motorcycle and he lost control of the motorcycle on the highway.

A Stephen Chira was a former Humboldt County inmate.

In 2006, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Chiara's  first degree murder conviction stating jurors that were Native American or Filipino or Japanese and others were improperly excluded from his trial.

In 2007, there was a retrial of Chiara's case. He was in parole at the time of the motorcycle crash.

His next court date is February 10.
