Considering the disorganization and time wasted in the People's portion of the Demetrius Coleman case, I was shocked to hear Judge Kelly Neel tell jurors "we are way ahead of schedule." The trial estimate could have been cut to 1/3 if the People's case had been handled efficiently.
After seeing a focused, articulate, brilliant presentation by Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm in the Mark Dare trial, having to watch the exact opposite in the Coleman case from Deputy DA Carolyn Schaffer is painful. You really find out how good an attorney is when you see them in a jury trial.
A juror has a morning appointment so on November 2, court will start at 9:30. Several jurors are voting on Election Day so that will be a dark day.
Testimony is expected to conclude this week and that includes the defense case. Of course, that depends if the People ever wrap up their case.
We have started late in the mornings, the afternoons, ended early and People put the same witnesses on the stand two or three times. I am still waiting for credible and direct evidence that it was Coleman who killed Johnny Renfro. There has been a lot of circumstantial evidence presented.
