Rio Dell police chief offered to help pay witness Mariah Acosta with costs for her attorney and help her get legal status

(the tallest guy in the photo is Sgt. Beauchaine, the guy in khakis is Chief Conner)

During Ms. Andrea Sullivan's re cross of Mariah Acosta, she asked her, "You are not in this country lawfully?" Ms. Sullivan asked her if she discussed her immigration status with Rio Dell Police Chief Jeff Conner.

"Yes, I am not legal," said Acosta.

Acosta had testified that after her initial interview with police, she told them she would not speak with them further until she had an attorney. Once she had an attorney, she spoke with police several times.

Ms. Sullivan questioned Acosta further about help she received from Chief Conner. "Did he offer to get you legal status?"

"My attorney brought it up," said Acosta.

In another case, Acosta's husband is charged with domestic violence against her. Chief Conner offered to help her pay for a lawyer, pay the costs and help her obtain legal status.

"He said he would help me and he would pay for it," said Acosta.

A staff member of the DA's office was aware of this arrangement. Her attorney went with Acosta to the DA's office. Acosta could not remember the man's name at the DA's office but it starts with a "W."

Very brief testimony about extraction from victim's cell phone then Rio Dell Sgt. John Beauchaine came back to testify for the third time about two cellphones that other witnesses said belong to Demetrius Coleman and three phones seized when Alma Ahumadamendoza was arrested in North Dakota.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer started her questioning of Sgt. Beauchaine with "Welcome back for the third time."

Testimony about the cell phones today was about chain of custody. There was one alleged statement that Sgt. John Beauchaine attributed to Jovan Ignjatovic.

That statement was Coleman allegedly saying why Regina Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic were cooperating with the police.

My question is why was Ignjatovic not questioned about it and what proof do the People have that Coleman said it?

In addition to not pursuing any other suspect leads, not searching Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic's property, now we have the only witness in the car with one of the principal parties being "helped" for testimony that is helpful to a weak investigation and case. No one went to the police on their own. We have two witnesses in the country illegally selling black market weed. One key witness gets legal status for her testimony. Two key witnesses get immunity agreements from the District Attorney.
