"It wasn't like I was attracted to her. I was just trying to get the bag."

 

Hands down the best testimony in the Demetrius Coleman case is from the defendant himself. Coleman was  upfront and his no holds barred testimony was in contrast to the lies and evasiveness we heard from Mariah Acosta, Regina Osenbaugh and Jovan Ignjatovic.

Coleman is 40 years old. He was born in Oakland. He has a felony conviction for attempted burglary from Butte County and a felony conviction for aggravated robbery from Minnesota. Coleman was in prison. He was released in 2016 and paroled in California.

Coleman had a "lot of friends" in Humboldt and came to Humboldt with a friend in 2017. There were opportunities to make money by being a broker in the illegal marijuana industry. Coleman took products from farmers and clients in California and out of state.

"I charge a $1 off each bag." His attorney, Ms. Andrea Sullivan had him to explain that meant one hundred dollars for each pound.

In 2018, he had romantic relationships "with a few females in Humboldt." Callie, Mariah Acosta and Shay.

Mariah Acosta is someone he met in 2018 at Dabs in Redway. At the first meeting, Acosta had samples.In March/April 2018, he met her at the trailer park, got her phone number  "we started working."

"I probably had three or four phones; sometimes five," said Coleman. "You just throw them away."

"I made her some money," Coleman said referring to Acosta. "At first, it was professional. One night we went to the Lost Frenchman in Redway. We went to the back patio with some other growers--other associates. We just started hanging out."

"The first time I interacted with her unprofessionally was in Miranda. We counted cash after a deal and we ended up smashing in a truck."

Asked to clarify what smashing meant, Coleman said, "we ended up having sex in a truck; in the Silverado." They had sex one more time.

They were not in a relationship. "It wasn't like I was attracted to her. I was just trying to get the bag.

"When I first got here, I found out women run the place." They get the "first bag." Acosta had access to good marijuana at that time.

They stopped talking because Acosta expected to get paid even when he made money with other people and would tell him how to do business. Coleman stopped calling her, "I bounced."

In 2019, he met Alma Ahumadamendoza who is his fiancee. He referred to her as "my girl", "my baby", "like the sun shining on a rainy day." They were friends before they were lovers. They talked on social media. Coleman was trying to get her number. "One night I caught her out."

"At the end of 2018", Coleman said he met  Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic "through some Bulgarians."

Ms. Sullivan asked Coleman if he thought Ignjatovic was Bulgarian. Then she asked him, ,"Do you know the difference between Bulgarians and Serbians?"

"No, I don't" responded Coleman. "I got referred to Jovan and Ms. Regina through a Bulgarian. We call them Bulgarians on the street. They grow some awesome stuff."

"Everybody grows around here," said Coleman. "Once you are established here, there are multiple places to obtain product." Coleman said he obtained product from Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic and sold it for them. There were a few million dollar deals.

The first time he did a million dollar cash deal for Ignjatovic and Osenbaugh was in March/April 2019. I had a bag. It was LG. I showed it to my people. They actually sent a Hispanic guy. I locked it in. They didn't even count all the cash." The money was in bills of  20s, 50s and 100s.

Coleman made a hundred thousand on that deal. When asked how much Ignjatovic and Osenbaugh made, Coleman replied, "I wasn't concerned about their cut."

The last transaction was in August 2019. Coleman met with "Jose." The sample Coleman was given "had PM; powder mode. I told him this wouldn't work." He offered to go talk to Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic. "Jovan sometimes doesn't feel good. Regina is busy with the kids. He fixed the bag."

"When I went to the farm, they didn't have all the product. That created friction between me, Regina and Jovan. I went there the night before with my client. Locked it in." This was to fix the PM issue.

"My people didn't want to move with a short amount of pounds. They were short 600 pounds. My people were pissed off ."

"Upto that point we were good," Colemsn said about his relationship with Osenbaugh and Ignjatovic.

Regarding his yearly income, Coleman said, "Sometimes it was good; sometimes bad. I took losses." He estimated "a couple hundred thousand and that he did not pay taxes on this income.
