Yesterday, the jury trial for alleged molestor Dean Brown started with Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm and Deputy Conflict Counsel R.J. Leohner meeting with Judge Kaleb Cockrum to go over motions in limine.
Brown was in court in a wheelchair. "This is a life top case with the special allegations," Judge Cockrum stated yesterday. Brown faces life without the possibility of parole."
Jury selection could not start yesterday because after hardship and initial filling of questionnaires out of 1,000 jurors, only 15 were available and not enough for a panel.
Judge Cockrum and attorneys will go over motions in limine and start questioning of individual jurors on Thursday or Friday. When that processes, the entire jury pool and jury selection will start.
In my last post, I reported defense made an offer to resolve the case for an open plea to Count 1 PC 288 (a). The maximum Brown could get for Count 1 is 8 years.
Brown is charged with 6 counts of PC 288 (a) and a special allegation of a prior conviction. Brown faces 75 years to life.
There are three alleged victims; all Jane Does are under 14 years of age. The alleged molestation took place at several locations, including the Bayshore Mall, Trinity River and Betty Chinn shelter.
10/5: This is one of the current cases impacted by shortage of jurors. Individual jurors are being questioned today and possibly tomorrow.
