Cody Christiansen doesn't deserve the attorney he has or the plea deal he got

On September 14, convicted felon Cody Christiansen accepted the People's offer of 9 years and entered a conditional plea to Count 1 PC 245 (b) assault with a semi automatic rifle, PC 12022.5 firearm used in the commission of a crime (a) one of the special allegations to Count 1 and Count 4 PC 273 (d) (a) inflicting cruel or inhuman corporal punishment or an injury on a child resulting in a traumatic condition.

Sentencing is on October 5.

Count 1 upper term of 6 years, special allegation low term of 3 years and 6 years for Count 4 to be served concurrently for a total of 9 years in prison.

The child was Christiansen's stepson who had bruises on his legs and buttocks because Christiansen was angry at the stepson for waking up another child.

The District Attorney had charged him with 14 counts for the jury trial. Deputy District Attorney Emily Norgaard made a motion to dismiss the rest of the special allegations and remaining 12 counts.

Christiansen was facing a lot of time in prison. He is so familiar with how custody credits are applied that he piped up in court.

Given his record, instead of glaring at me for posting facts, Christiansen should be thanking his third court appointed attorney, Ms. Andrea Sullivan for the plea deal she negotiated despite having the case for two months.

He and any other Humboldt client are lucky to have Ms. Sullivan as their attorney because she doesn't shy away from difficult cases, she is honest with her clients about the reality of their cases, she puts in 200 percent, she fights for her clients and she gets plea deals others would not.

Ms. Sullivan practices in Mendocino, Lake and other California counties. When she first started taking Humboldt cases, I saw in her what other Humboldt Judges and other local attorneys now respect and admire.

10/5: Sentencing continued by defense to 10/19 to review probation report.
