Kidnapping suspect Chai Her is out of custody, preliminary rescheduled due to discovery


Intervention was scheduled this afternoon for kidnapping suspect Chai Her. Defense request to continue the preliminary hearing scheduled for January 8 was granted by Judge Timothy Canning despite objection by the People. Judge Canning found good cause.



Her is out of custody. Deputy Conflict Counsel Owen Tipps has a motion to compel discovery scheduled for tomorrow which is still on calendar to make sure discovery is received. Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is going to provide defense the items requested today. Mr. Tipps needs time to discuss the discovery with Her.

Her is charged with three felonies: Count 1 kidnapping; Count 2 with false imprisonment; Count 3 fleeing while being pursued by law enforcement and a special allegation of a prior conviction in Humboldt for PC 459-PC460 (a), burglary.

Alleged victim is Jennifer Talynn Hurn.

Intervention is on February 5; preliminary hearing is on February 20.
