When I first started doing court coverage, it was Judge Marilyn Miles, Judge John Feeney, Judge Dale Reinholtsen and Judge Timothy Cissna. Judge Christopher Wilson is the only one left from that group and he is retiring soon.

"Have sex with me or I will rape you" is what Dues allegedly said to one acquaintance while "humping her leg"
Jurors seemed less than thrilled filing into Courtroom 1 for convicted sex offender David Dues trial on his most recent case. Whether that is the nature of the case or due to sitting with masks on for hours in the stuffy, windowless Courthouse waiting for the courtroom to open would both be accurate guesses based on what I observed and heard.
Defense wants to dismiss charges; DA wants a continuance
The endless cycle of continuances in murder suspect Ryan Tanner's case was finally broken after months. Sort of; there was a pre trial & motion to continue scheduled today. The district attorney wants to continue the jury trial in Tanner's homicide case or advance the preliminary hearing in Tanner's kidnap/assault/false imprisonment case.

He was arrested yesterday on a bench warrant by Fortuna Police on various charges including resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.

Eureka City Hall burglar sentenced to 2 years, 8 months in prison
On 1/25/22 the day his preliminary was scheduled, Kenneth Mohamed entered a plea in the Eureka City Hall burglary case. Yesterday, he was sentenced to two years, 8 months in prison. Mohammed had a total of 157 custody credits in the burglary case.
Kalin vs Judge Elvine-Kreis case management conference continued to April
The case management conference in the lawsuit filed by former Humboldt Deputy Public Defender Rory Kalin against Humboldt Superior Court Judge Gregory Elvine-Kreis, former Public Defender Marek Reavis and current Public Defender Luke Brownfield was continued to April 15.
One sex offense preliminary continued because prosecutor is currently in trial prosecuting a convicted sex offender
On February 14, the District Attorney's office made a motion to continue alleged child molestor Manuel Garcia Avalos preliminary hearing to 3/28/22.
Deputy Public Defender Wade Orbelian represents Avalos. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prosecutor and she is currently in trial on another sex offense case.

Mauricio Johnson sentenced to stipulated term of 150 years to life

Mauricio Johnson sentenced to the stipulated sentence of 150 years to life. He will be on lifetime parole. Johnson has 370 days of actual credits. He received no "good time" conduct credits. Sentence for each count to be served consecutively. Johnson opted not to make a sentencing.
Johnson was sentenced to 25 years to life for each murder count and 25 years to life for each special enhancement for each count. All these to be served consecutively.
Suspect arrested at 4th Street motel and booked on fentanyl charges
Another Eureka motel, another drug bust. Gee, I wonder what motel that could be in the 1300 block of Eureka.
"As I stated this has been the single most devastating crime on our reservation in modern history and to see it delt with with virtually little to no respect to those who lost loved ones is completely disrespectful and demeaning."
Mauricio Johnson is being sentenced today. All day has been set aside for the sentencing.

Yet another continuance but at least this was for a good cause
On 2/10 alleged molestor Thomas Singleton's preliminary hearing was continued to 4/7/22.
Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer, the prosecutor is in currently in trial. The other reason the hearing was continued was because Singleton would not waive his right to a continuous preliminary.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer and Deputy Public Defender Ben McLaughlin are currently in trial and the defendant is convicted sex offender David Dues. Ms. Kylie Boyd is co-counsel for Dues.
Judge Christopher Wilson is presiding over the trial.
I only had a brief moment to check his latest case. I have covered Dues since 2014. Dues previously served no time for a sexual battery case. Dues has been frequently arrested, including for allegedly soliciting two teenage girls visiting HSU.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has provided updated guidance for the use of face masks effective February 16, 2022. In accordance with the updated guidance from CDPH, Humboldt Superior Court issues the following mask requirements effective February 16, 2022:
Tammy Reavis got quite the deal on the day of her jury trial and the more serious charges were dismissed
Tammy Marie Farmer Reavis resolved her case on the day her jury trial was scheduled. On 1/31/22 she entered a waiver and guilty plea on one count; a misdemeanor. Three more serious counts were dismissed. No jail time. Probation and community service work.
Deputy DA Rees causes havoc in court, with the prelim calendar, defies Judge Neel and Humboldt Superior Court

This morning, Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees refused to wear a mask in court and in the hallway. This is still required on the second floor of the Courthouse. Humboldt Superior Court CEO Kim Bartelson had to intervene. Instead of putting on a mask, Mr. Rees went to his office to appear via Zoom.
Assistant Presiding Judge Kelly Neel who is in Courtroom 2 today ordered him to come down to court. Mr. Rees came down and refused to wear a mask even after he was ordered to do so. Judge Neel ordered him to leave the courtroom and everyone in Courtroom 2 had to wait for over a half hour for another Deputy DA to appear.
Assistant Deputy DA Stacey Eads was running around to cover Mr. Rees cases assigned for preliminary. She has her own work. Two experienced Deputy DAs are in trial.
Shortly before the noon hour, Mr. Rees walked in with a mask on just as Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo was making a motion to dismiss a case for failure to prosecute.
Around 11:50 a.m. Mr. Rees asked the Judge Neel to recuse herself from hearing the motion.
I was not inside Courtroom 2 for all the events but I was at the Courthouse and on the second floor.
"The easement provides the County of Humboldt the legal right to construct the trail while California Redwood Company retains ownership of the property."
The County of Humboldt has acquired an easement from California Redwood Company, a subsidiary of Green Diamond Resource Company, to develop approximately 1 mile of the Humboldt Bay Trail on the levee surrounding the Brainard mill site.
Arrested for probation violation, released on OR
Christopher Cory Bailey was arrested by Arcata Police Department yesterday and booked on a bench warrant in his probation violation case. He was released on OR.
