"As I stated this has been the single most devastating crime on our reservation in modern history and to see it delt with with virtually  little to no respect to those who lost loved ones is completely disrespectful and demeaning."

Mauricio Johnson is being sentenced today. All day has been set aside for the sentencing.

Judge Timothy Canning is listening to victim impact statements right now.

"Before sentencing, the victims, family members and others make victim impact statements. One statement by an elder was shared with me by a family member. If you read my exclusive coverage, you know how the family feels and this statement speaks for all those affected by this triple homicide.

I had informed some of the family I may not be there for the entire sentencing and why. This is what the the family member wrote to me. For 8 years, I have been at that courthouse every day and while many appreciate what I do, very few are compassionate and understanding and personally supportive of me. I thank the family member who in midst of grief has shown such empathy and kindness.

We as a family are getting our Victim Impact Statements (VIS)- together..- this one touched my heart from a BRBRR a Tribal Elder. I can not believe that we are heading to the one year aftermath, and it hurts so deeply. "

"I really do appreciate all your hard work and getting out there in our community to raise awareness about politics, current events, and crime. You have done a great job, a job, nobody wants to touch or do. You have a Big Heart!"

"Above please take care of yourself, I completely understand how overwhelmed your job can be. "

This is the statement by Donald Brenard.

To whom it may concern:

I am an elder of the Bear River Band  of the Rhonerville Rancheria part of what I do is help to keep some of the tribal ceremonies one that I have been particularly involved with is the grieving ceremonies so I have very intimate experience with the effect that this crime has had upon our community  This has been the most devastating event in our recent history many of our people are deeply taken aback but the plea arrangement that has been offered.

This man and he is by the traditional as well as contemporary judgement of both of our society's a man did willingly entered into this family's home with the intent to do something that he know to be unethical immoral and legally wrongful  he brought the weapon into the home with the intent to use it to force his need or desire upon the inhalants this was not a moment of passion it was premeditated and given much thought and prepration there many who feel that this plea bargain is a slap in the face are native lives not worth the time and trouble to try a triple murder along with a rape charge

There are many who feel that Mr Jhonson did not act alone and we feel that this plea will detract the possibility of a through  investigation possibly letting another assailant  go free it is our belief that this case was dealt with in a very unprofessional  manner and that this deal is to just hurry up and sweep it under the rug this will demonstrate  itself in a inability of our people to believe that they can get unbiased treatment from this government and its legal system I believe that the tribe should be the party to pass sentence not federal state or county and it is my sincere belief that this should never been addressed under state or county prosecution

"As I stated this has been the single most devastating crime on our reservation in modern history and to see it delt with with virtually  little to no respect to those who lost loved ones is completely disrespectful and demeaning."

Sincerely Donald Brenard

Johnson entered a plea last October. The People accepted defense offer of 150 years to life in prison. Johnson will have a parole hearing in 25 years.

Johnson pleaded guilty before Judge Timothy Canning to three counts of first-degree murder and admitted three special allegations for use of a firearm causing death for the killings of Nikki Metcalf, Margarett Moon, and confidential minor victim Jane Doe, in February of this year, on the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria Reservation.

Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is the prosecutor.
