"I am wide eyed about the challenges that our community and judiciary face."

Deputy District Attorney Steven Steward just officially kicked off his campaign for Judge Christopher Wilson's seat this afternoon outside the Courthouse.

District Attorney Maggie Fleming, Assistant Deputy DA Stacey Eads, several of his co-workers, DA staff, local attorney Michael Robinson, neighbors, friends and Mr. Steward's family were in attendance. About 50 people were present.

I did a post two days ago with his announcement. Mr. Steward was introduced by local attorney Nick Kloeppel.

Mr. Kloeppel spoke of Mr. Steward's character and demeanor and said he would make a great Judge.

"Thank you for the kind introduction Nick Kloeppel. And thanks to every one of you for coming including elected officials, supporters, friends, and family," said Mr. Steward.

"Today I am announcing my candidacy for the next Humboldt Superior Court Judge."

"As a father of young children, as a prosecutor and former defense attorney and as a member of this community I am committed to fairness, compassion and accountability that this important job demands."

"I am wide eyed about the challenges that our community and judiciary face. We are challenged by the coronavirus pandemic as well as an epidemic of substance abuse and lack of mental health treatment. We must help ensure public safety from violent crime, wide spread petty theft and property crimes all of which harm our businesses and tear at the social fabric of our cities. Our community needs a judge that has the right experience, is fair, shows compassion and demands accountability."

Mr. Steward then elaborated on experience, fairness, compassion and accountability.

He concluded with,  "I am proud to say that I have the support of law enforcement, defense attorneys, civil litigators and prosecutors. If given the opportunity I will serve the people of Humboldt County with the same honesty, integrity and hard work that I have shown as your Deputy DA."

"I know that our community faces many problems. Many of which are beyond the scope of a judge."

"But I do know that a judge who is fair, compassionate and demands accountability is necessary for our community to continue to thrive. For these reasons I am asking for your support, for your help as this campaign moves forward and for your vote on June 7th. Thank you for coming out today and for your support."
