The courthouse lobby is calm now around lunch but a bit before 9 a.m. this morning when attorneys and others in the courthouse were at the 5th street entrance, they had to deal with more than the rain and usual Monday morning chaos.
A guy nicknamed "Bongo Bob slugged" Deputy Public Defender Jason Sheets. The guy usually sits outside the courthouse banging on his drums, annoying whoever he can and this morning decided to that he would bring his acting out into the Courthouse and impede people on their way into work or others conducting business.
I did not see the entire exchange and the versions differ depending on who you talk to but "Bongo Bob" had an issue with going through security. Everyone has to do it and when security told him they had to check his bag for possible contraband, he freaked out.
Security asked him to calm down. Mr. Sheets asked him to calm down. After a while, Mr. Sheets said something like,"Dude no one cares" and "Bongo Bob" punched him. Security called the HCSO Sgt who supervises them and "Bongo Bob" was arrested.
Richard Jeremy Needham was arrested by HCSO at 8:55 a.m.for PC 240 assault and PC 242 battery. He was released on OR. HCSO PIO Samantha Karges confirmed Needham is the suspect in the incident this morning.
Needham has 27 cases in the Humboldt Superior Court system.
