Humboldt Superior Court Judge April Van Dyke is in Courtroom 1 today instead of her regular courtroom which is 6. Retired Humboldt Judge Marilyn Miles is filling in 2 this week.
Judge Steven Steward is in his Courtroom 3. Judge Timothy Canning in his Courtroom 4. Judge Lawrence Killoran in his Courtroom 5.
Humboldt Retired Judge Joyce Hinrichs is a no show today and Judge Van Dyke is covering Courtroom 1. Humboldt Commisioner Sarah Kaber is covering the Courtroom 6 calendar and her own calendar for Courtroom 8.
Humboldt Judge Kaleb Cockrum is not in this week.
This is not just about covering courtrooms. If a defendant or the DA disqualifies a judge, then courtroom administration has to shuffle cases on a Monday.
Judge Miles shows up and it is always great to see her and cover her courtroom. Retired Judges John Feeney and Judge Christopher Wilson show up.
I saw Judge Feeney later today. He stepped in to help out and will be in Courtroom 1 all week.
Who knows when California Governor Gavin Newsom will appoint someone for Judge Joyce Hinrichs seat. Might as well have an election with other Humboldt judicial positions in June 2026 because Visiting Judges cost money and Humboldt is a small, rural court.
